Ice Cold First Half Dooms Henderson in Loss to SWOSU

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State could not overcome an ice cold shooting first half on Thursday night and fell 71-60 to Southwestern Oklahoma State at the Duke Wells Center.

Alvin Miles had his fifth-straight double figure scoring game and led the Reddies with 15 points and six rebounds. Both Malik Riddle and Xavier Davenport finished with 10.

Henderson (13-9, 9-7) dug itself in a big hole early on its home floor. The Reddies hit just one of their first 15 shots to open the game and went 6-for-30 (20%) from the field for the half.

SWOSU, who hit eight 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes, took advantage and opened up a lead of as many as 24 points with 2:32 to go until the break. Riddle gave HSU a flicker of momentum by scoring nine of his 10 points in the last 1:24 of the period, but the Reddies still faced a 41-24 deficit going into the locker room.

A second half team for much of the year, Henderson proved its mettle in the second half and began slowly to claw its way back. Trailing 54-37 with 10:26 remaining, the Reddies were finally able to put together a run, and used two buckets each from Miles and Davenport to score the game's next nine points and close the gap to 54-46 with 8:42 left.

After climbing back into the contest, HSU continued to try and erase the deficit over the final eight minutes, but it was not to be. Despite cutting the lead to eight on four different occasions down the stretch, the Reddies were unable to get any closer, as SWOSU found answers late and held on for its first win over Henderson since 2015.

HSU shot just 30% from the floor in defeat and was out-rebounded 45-36. The Reddies' bench out-scored SWOSU by 25 points, but 3-pointers proved to be the difference, as the Bulldogs hit 10 compared to just six for Henderson.

The Reddies return to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. when they host Northwestern Oklahoma State.
