ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State got seven scoreless innings of work from Spencer Taack and a two-run homer from Greyson Stevens on Saturday, as the Reddies defeated rival Ouachita Baptist 4-0 in their season opener at Clyde Berry Field.
Taack, a GAC First Team selection last season, was terrific on Opening Day. The senior from Dallas struck out six batters and surrendered just three hits to earn his first win of the year in shutout fashion.Â
Stevens finished 1-for-4 at the plate but had the biggest moment of the afternoon when he hammered a two-run blast over the wall in right-center field in the seventh inning. The mammoth shot gave the Reddies the 4-0 lead that was eventually the margin of victory.Â
Henderson struck first in the second frame when newcomers Luke Farrar and Pate Fullerton used back-to-back doubles to put the Reddies in front 1-0. Nick Butler added the second run for HSU in the fourth when he doubled to score Landon Ervin.
Brayden Bebee pitched a dominant final two innings for HSU. The Arkadelphia native struck out three batters and allowed just one hit.
Ouachita never truly threatened and had just one runner in scoring position on Saturday during the third inning.
The Reddies return to action tomorrow at 2 p.m. when they host Northwest Missouri State at Clyde Berry Field.
