ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — No. 16 Henderson State used a shutout and a comeback victory on Sunday afternoon to sweep a doubleheader against Harding, 4-0 and 10-6, and win the series at Clyde Berry Field.
The Reddies (17-2, 9-2) are now 15-0 this season in contests played at Clyde Berry Field. HSU will go for its third three-game sweep of a GAC series in four weekends tomorrow when it hosts the Bisons for single game at 1 p.m.
GAME 1: Henderson State 4, Harding 0
Spencer Taack hurled a gem and improved to 5-0 on the year as his shutout effort helped the Reddies defeat Harding 4-0 in the series opening game.Â
Taack was terrific and pitched seven scoreless innings. The senior from Dallas allowed just three hits while striking out four and walking one. Andrew Howard and Brayden Bebee each pitched an inning of relief to close it out for HSU.
Greyson Stevens and Jacob Carroll both finished with two hits for Henderson. Stevens had a two-RBI double in the first and Carroll blasted a solo home run in the fourth.
Three of the four total runs scored in the contest came in the Reddies' first turn at the plate. HSU used three hits, including back-to-back doubles from David Vilches and Stevens, as well as a walk and a sacrifice fly to go in front 3-0.
After HU stranded the bases loaded in the top half of the fourth inning, Carroll's solo shot added the last run of the game for Henderson. The four runs were more than enough thanks to Taack's efforts on the mound. The Bisons were limited to four hits on the day and managed just one in the final five innings.
GAME 2: Henderson State 10, Harding 6
Kaden Argenbright went 4-for-4 at the plate and hit two separate three-run home runs to help HSU erase a four-run deficit and defeat the Bisons 10-6 in the seven-inning game of the doubleheader.
Argenbright had his best game of the season for the Reddies and finished with six RBIs, two home runs, a double and two runs scored. Greyson Stevens also had a homer that plated two runs for Henderson in a big fifth inning, which saw the Reddies score five runs and turn a 6-5 hole into a 10-6 lead.
Ethan Perry earned the win in relief of starter Ryan Galvan and threw three scoreless innings. Perry gave up three hits and walked one batter. Brayden Bebee slammed the door shut in the seventh after Harding loaded the bases with one out to get his second save of the season.
The Bisons got off to a quick start and used a home run in the first and to runs on three hits in the third to take a 4-0 advantage. Henderson got three back in the bottom of the third when Argenbright's first homer to right field brought in three to cut the deficit down to 4-3.
Harding responded with another two runs on three hits in the fourth to push the advantage back out to 6-3, but the Reddies kept coming. After being hit by a pitch to begin Henderson's half of the inning and advancing to third on a throwing error, Bryson Haskins scored HSU's fourth run on a wild pitch to make it 6-4. Two batters later, Nick Butler brought in Pate Fullerton with a ground out RBI to whittle the Bisons' lead to 6-5.
After a scoreless fifth frame, the Reddies flipped the game in the bottom of the sixth when they used four hits, including the two blasts from Argenbright and Stevens, to plate five runs and seize a 10-6 lead. Cade Tucker and Colton Patterson had the other two hits in the inning for HSU.
HU refused to go quietly in the seventh and loaded the bases on two hit batters and a single with one out. With the tying run at the plate, Bebee entered for Henderson and promptly delivered a fly out and a game-ending swinging strikeout to give the Reddies the series-clinching victory.
Both sides finished with 10 hits in the seven-inning game, but Harding stranded 11 baserunners compared to just five for HSU. The Reddie pitching staff left three Bisons stranded in both the first and seventh.Â
