Softball Edged Out By Northwestern in Alva

ALVA, Oklahoma – Henderson State fell just short Friday evening in game one against Northwestern Oklahoma State, 5-4. The loss is the Reddies' fourth consecutive loss by one run and their second time in the last three losses to fall at the hands of a walk-off.

Lexi Trejo played her best game of the season, seeing three hits on four at-bats with two RBIs and two runs. Bre Jones followed a similar path with two hits on three at-bats. As a team, Henderson out-hit the Lady Rangers, 9-8.

It was not until the second inning until the game's first runs were scored from the side of the visitors. Trejo delivered one of her three hits in the form of a double, scoring Jones and Madison Treutlein, who had each singled earlier in the frame, to take the 2-0 lead.

Holding Northwestern scoreless in its at-bat of the second inning, HSU was forced to leave two base runners stranded in the top of the third, leaving the door open for NWOSU to seize the lead in the bottom of the third. Using three hits and an HSU error, the Lady Rangers plated three runs to claim the lead, 3-2.

A Justine Burch double tied it up for HSU in the top of the fourth, remaining as such until the sixth inning when it was Henderson's turn to take advantage of a pair of Northwestern errors to score the go-ahead run, 4-3. The bottom of the sixth and the top of the seventh saw each pitcher put down the opposition in order to keep the Reddies in front heading into the final half-inning.

At 4-3 in favor of Henderson, two hits and two walks in the game's final at-bat spelled the end for HSU, as a Lady Ranger walk-off single with the bases loaded after an error had allowed the initial game-tying run to score gave Northwestern the victory in game one of the weekend series, 5-4.

Henderson St. (6-23, 3-9) will go for the doubleheader sweep tomorrow in an attempt to win its second conference series of the season. Play begins at 11 a.m. with the third and final game to follow.
