MONTICELLO, Ark. — No. 6 Henderson State split two games of a doubleheader with UAM on Saturday, winning the first contest 11-5 and falling in the second 2-0 in 10 innings.
The Reddies (15-2, 7-2) will be back at home this weekend when they host Harding for a single game at 6 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday at Clyde Berry Field.
GAME 1: Henderson State 11, UAM 5
The Reddies scored six runs in the second inning of Saturday's first game to set the tone early and defeat the Weevils 11-5.Â
HSU had nine hits in the game, all of which were singles, and also drew eight walks. Braden Carpenter had a career day and went 3-for-5 at the plate for Henderson, while Greyson Stevens finished with two hits and three RBIs.Â
Cade Tucker earned the victory on the mound by pitching six innings and allowing four runs on five hits. Tucker struck out five batters and walked three.
Henderson got after UAM starter Mason Philley in a hurry on Saturday, as the Reddies struck for six runs on four hits in the second inning to seize a 6-0 lead. Philley issued four walks in the frame and Kaden Argenbright drove in two of the runs on an RBI single.
The Weevils were able to cut the deficit down to 7-4 after five complete with two runs in both the third and fifth, but the late innings also belonged to HSU. Henderson took advantage of a wild pitch and three free passes to score two runs on no hits in the seventh, then added two more on an RBI single from Stevens in the eighth.Â
Reliever Ethan Roark was fantastic and got the save after pitching the final three innings. Roark faced just 11 batters and sat the last nine down in order to end the game. He finished with three strikeouts and gave up just one run on one hit.
GAME 2: UAM 2, Henderson State 0 (10 innings)
Starter Ryan Galvan pitched a gem for the Reddies in the rubber match, but HSU was unable to scratch a run across and fell in extra-innings, 2-0.
In what was scheduled to be a seven-inning game, Galvan worked the longest outing of any Reddie pitcher this season by going 8.1 innings and allowing no runs on eight hits. He earned a no-decision in defeat.
Henderson's potent offense was limited to just six hits by Weevils' starter Spencer Johnston and reliever Trent Bunting. After serving up eight walks and three hit batters in game one, UAM's staff issued just one total free base to HSU in the third and final game of the series.
The Reddies had opportunities to take the lead in the late innings, but stranded the go-ahead runner on third base in the fifth, eighth and tenth. Bad luck played a part in the misfortune on the first two accounts, as twice Kaden Argenbright laced a ball hard directly into the glove of an infielder to end an inning.
After neither team could break through for over nine frames, UAM finally made Henderson pay in the bottom half of the 10th. With a man on second base, the Weevils' Jordan Johnson, who became the GAC's all-time leader in home runs last weekend, added another to his resume to end the game 2-0 in Monticello's favor.
