COMMERCE, Texas - Henderson State was barely edged out by one of the nation's better teams Wednesday afternoon, falling to No. 19 Texas A&M-Commerce, 6-3 and 1-0. The one-run loss is the closest game TAMUC has had in victory in nearly a month.
Krystal Lindsey got the start in the circle in game one, pitching four innings while only giving up four runs, two of which were earned, on only five hits to the No. 19 Lions. In addition to her work as a pitcher, Lindsey also paced the Reddies at the plate, getting on base three times thanks to going 2-for-2 at the dish and getting hit by a pitch.
In the second game,
Monica Monreal, in what was only her fifth start all season, was superb at the rubber, holding Commerce to just one hit in the outing. The performance from the senior marked only the third time all season the Lions were held to a single hit. Monreal saw four strikeouts in the effort.
Henderson St. (12-36, 9-18) only has two weekend series' remaining in the 2022 regular season, beginning Friday, April 22 at 3 p.m. in Durant, Oklahoma, against Southeastern Oklahoma State.
Game 1: Texas A&M-Commerce 6, Henderson State 3
Lindsey saw her best three-inning stretch of the season from the circle, allowing only two hits in that time. Even when the Lions threatened with runners on second and third with only one out in the second, Lindsey struck out the next two batters to move play right along. That damage control allowed
Abbie Moore to come to the plate with a tied ballgame in the fourth inning.
After the top of the fourth starting with back-to-back strikeouts, a Monreal walk allowed Moore to send a two-run blast over the left-center wall to give Henderson the first lead of the game at 2-0. Unfortunately, HSU was unable to hold back the Top-20 powerhouse after that as a four-run bottom of the fourth gave TAMUC its first lead of the game, 4-2.
After the Lions logged another run in the fifth, an RBI single from Monreal in the fourth brought the deficit to back to two, 5-3, before one final run from Commerce spelled final for HSU, 6-3.
Game 2: Texas A&M-Commerce 1, Henderson State 0
Monreal had her best showing of the season from the pitching circle, not allowing her first hit until the bottom of the fourth. Commerce would have been held scoreless by the traditional first baseman up until that point if not for a outfield error that scored the only run of the game.  Â
As great as the pitching was for Henderson, it was just as good for the home team as the Lions' pitcher was looking at a perfect game if not for one walk, hurling a no-hitter in route to victory.Â
