Reddies Fall in Straight Sets to Oklahoma Baptist

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State volleyball fell in three sets to the Bison of Oklahoma Baptist at the Duke Wells Center on Friday.

The Reddies (15-8, 6-4) struggled to get the attack going as OKBU outhit HSU .218 to .134, with Christiane Uzoh leading the offense with 12 kills on a .267 attack average. Violeta Mendoza Quintana and Jagoda Szybinska combined for 13 of the Reddies' 38 kills, while Madison Hatt recorded a team-high 17 assists.

SET ONE
HSU came out with a hot start, jumping on top of the Bison 6-2 after two kills by Uzoh. The two sides went back and forth from there, and the Reddies continued to hold the edge 14-12. A 3-0 run saw OKBU take its first lead of the set, 15-14, but two kills by Skye Johns and another from Mendoza Quintana put HSU back in front 19-17. The Reddies and Oklahoma Baptist were tied at 19-19 and 20-20 before the Bison broke the deadlock on a 4-0 run to take the lead 24-22 and would get the final point of the set to win 25-22.

SET TWO
A fast start by the Bison in set two had OKBU up 6-2, and 10-4 before Henderson St. had to use a timeout. The Oklahoma Baptist attack kept up the pace, extending its lead after the break to 18-7. Three different 3-0 spurts by the Reddies chipped away at OBKU's advantage, but the Bison would eventually win the second frame 25-19.

SET THREE
The Reddies fell behind early in the third stanza after Oklahoma Baptist opened the set on a 6-0 run. Two kills by Uzoh cut the deficit to three, 8-5, but the Bison attack grew their lead up to seven, 14-7, forcing HSU to use a timeout.

OKBU held a four to five-point advantage over HSU through the middle of parts of the frame, 22-14. A late rally by Henderson St. saw them get within two after a 7-1 stretch capped off by a kill and service ace by Hatt, 23-21. The Bison would score the final two points to take the set 25-21.

Henderson State resumes action at the Duke Wells Center at 2 p.m. tomorrow when they welcome Southern Nazarene.
