ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – After falling behind 1-0 in the match, Henderson State won the next three sets to defeat the Crimson Storm of Southern Nazarene 3-1 at the Duke Wells Center. The Reddies improved to 16-8 overall and 7-4 in conference matches.
Christiane Uzoh paced an attack that logged 49 kills on a .195 attack average with 14 kills, while
Violeta Mendoza Quintana and
Jagoda Szybinska each had eight.
Madison Hatt orchestrated the offense with a team-high 26 assists and added ten digs to her totals for a double-double.
The HSU defense out-blocked SNU 14-6, with
Larkin Luke and Szybinska combining for ten blocks as each had five. Mendoza Quintana and
Trinity Sharp led a back row that had 92 digs, with 26 and 15, respectively.
SET ONE
The Reddies led the opening set 5-3 through two kills by Uzoh before the Crimson Storm jumped out in front 9-6 on a 6-1 run. SNU extended its advantage to 13-8, but HSU battled back, cutting the deficit to one after two blocks by Luke and would eventually take the lead 20-17 through two kills from Luke. SNU used a timeout to regroup and did just that, going on a 7-2 run to retake control 24-22 and would get the final point of the set to win 25-23.
SET TWO
Henderson State came out swinging to start the second set, racing out to a 7-1 lead after three kills by Uzoh and two more from Szybinska. SNU was forced into a timeout, but the Reddies did not slow down, scoring four straight points, making the Crimson Storm use their final timeout down 11-2.
HSU kept up the pace, extending its lead to 13-2 before a service ace by
Dani Dagley and two errors by the Crimson Storm stretched the red-and-grays advantage to 17-3. Two kills and a block by Mendoza Quintana grew the Reddies' advantage to 20-4 before two more kills by Uzoh capped off a dominant 25-11 set.
SET THREE
The momentum stayed with Henderson through the early exchanges of the third set as the Reddies jumped ahead 8-2. HSU led 13-6 and 15-7 before taking their largest lead of the set, 18-10, through a kill by Uzoh and a SNU attack error. The Reddies had to defend off a late run by the Crimson Storm, which saw them get within four, but
Brae Denton and Uzoh finished off the frame with a kill apiece to take the third set 25-20.
SET FOUR
Southern Nazarene led 3-0 in the opening rallies, but the Reddies quickly found their footing, going on a 5-0 tear. Back-to-back kills by Szybinska and another from Luke extend Henderson's edge to 10-6. Four Southern Nazarene errors and an ace off the hands of Hatt saw the Reddies' advantage grow to 18-10.
Again, SNU battled back late, cutting HSU's lead to two, 22-20.
Jacey Tupper and Luke combine for a block and another kill by Mendoza Quintana clinched a 25-22 set victory for the Reddies.
Henderson State returns to action next Thursday, Oct. 26, on the road in Searcy, Ark., for a clash with Harding at 6 p.m. at the Rhodes-Reaves Field House.
