Reddies Record Nine Sacks, Shut Down Weevils, 42-14

MONTICELLO, Ark. - (RV) Henderson State tied a program record with nine sacks on Arkansas-Monticello quarterback Buddy Taylor as the Reddies dominated the Boll Weevils Saturday afternoon, 42-14.

Gary Lewis (3.0), Dylan Ndambuki (2.0) and Trenton Moore (2.0) combined for seven of Henderson's nine sacks. On the season, HSU is up to 32 sacks, which is the second most sacks in a single season during the GAC era for the red-and-gray with three games still to go.

Henderson State completely stonewalled the UAM rushing attack, allowing just 17 yards on the ground thanks to 11 tackles-for-loss while picking off Taylor two times. For the game, HSU forced Monticello into seven punts.

Andrew Edwards delivered a near-flawless performance throwing the football, completing 81.5 percent (22-of-27) of his passes for 295 yards and four touchdowns. Edwards also added 34 yards and a score on the ground for his second five-touchdown performance of the season.

It was an extremely balanced attack for the Reddies as they accounted for 289 rushing yards and 295 passing yards for a season-high 584 total yards - more than doubling up UAM as the Boll Weevils finished with just 251 total yards.

Henderson State's defense exhibited its dominance early and often as all six of Arkansas-Monticello's first-half drives ended in either a punt or turnover. The Reddie offense rode the defense's first-half shutout as they added 28 points in the first 30 minutes.

Those four scores came courtesy of Edwards as Elijah George, Cayden Davis and Fredrick O'Donald all claimed a touchdown reception in the opening two stanzas before Edwards' legs opened the four-score lead at the break.

Henderson's three drives in the third quarter finished with a punt, but HSU's defense continued the shutout performance. Arkansas-Monticello saw its first points of the afternoon early in the fourth quarter. The Reddies responded to that with their first points of the second half five minutes later with Edwards' fourth passing touchdown, this time to Micah Greene, to reestablish the 28-point lead, 35-7.

The red-and-gray threatened to score moments later after UAM was ushered into its fourth three-and-out, but a 99-yard scoop-and-score for the Boll Weevils gave them their second score of the contest, 35-14.

With 3:35 remaining in the game, Arkansas-Monticello opted to go with an unsuccessful onside kick. Henderson took that and turned it into a methodical, eight-play, 44-yard drive that took 2:54 off the clock before Korien Burrell punched it in on the ground for the final points of the game, 42-14.

(RV) Henderson St. (6-2) will return to Carpenter-Haygood Stadium one final time for the 2023 regular season when they host Northwestern Oklahoma State for Senior Day Saturday, Oct. 28 at 2 p.m.
