MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Henderson State gets its second win over Christian Brothers this season, defeating the Lady Bucs 3-1 inside the Canale Arena.
The Reddies (14-6, 5-2) finished the match hitting .209 a clip with 49 kills, led by
Jagoda Szybinska with 16 kills on a .324 attack average.
Nathalie Van recorded a career-high 26 assists on her way to a third double-double of the season with ten digs.
Trinity Sharp and
Kaylon Partain combined for 32 digs, while
Larkin Luke had four blocks.
SET ONE
The Reddies led 4-2 through the first six rallies and kills by
Violeta Mendoza Quintana and
Mia Sanchez extended the lead to 6-2. The Lady Bucs responded with a 4-0 run to tie the set 6-6, but HSU would go back ahead 9-7 after a kill by Szybinska. CBU tied the set 10-10 on a 3-0 run and eventually took the lead 14-11.
Christian Brothers kept on the front foot after a Henderson timeout, stretching its advantage to 21-13, forcing HSU to use its final timeout. A late charge by the Reddies fell short after cutting the lead to 24-20 as CBU took the opening frame 25-21.
SET TWO
Henderson State was red-hot in the opening exchanges as a kill by Sanchez sparked a 13-1 run that had four kills by Szybinska. HSU continued to grow its advantage after a pair of errors by the Lady Bucs to 18-3. Two more kills by Szbinska and a kill from
Skye Johns closed out a dominant 25-11 frame. The Reddies finished the frame with a .297 attack average while holding CBU to five kills on a -.057 attack average.
SET THREE
The two sides went back and forth to start the third set with three ties and two lead changes, with the score tied 7-7. Christian Brothers broke the deadlock with a pair of kills to take the lead 12-9. CBU kept a two to three-point advantage, but the Reddies outscored the Lady Bucs 5-1 to go up by one, 16-15.
Kills by
Christiane Uzoh, Luke and Parsons grew the HSU lead to 21-19 and would stretch to 24-20 after a Van service ace. An attack error by CBU sealed a 25-20 set win for HSU and put the Reddies ahead 2-1 in the match.
SET FOUR
HSU was ahead 5-2 after kills by Sanchez and Luke, but three consecutive points by Christian Brothers saw them jump on top 7-5. The two sides traded points with the score tied 10-10, and a 5-1 run by the Lady Bucs opened their lead to 16-12. Henderson responded with a 5-0 stretch that started with a CBU error and finished with a kill by Szybinska, 17-16.
The Reddies closed out the final exchanges with a 6-1 run that featured two kills from
Brae Denton to win the last set 25-20. Henderson State stays on the road for its next two matches against Southeastern Oklahoma State and East Central on Oct. 12-13.
