SEARCY, Ark. - With the Reddies leading at halftime by only one point,
Zyon Patterson scored 15 of his team-high 20 points in the second half to help Henderson State outscore Harding 48-36 in the game's final 20 minutes for the eventual 78-65 victory.
Patterson and
Malek Davis were the big catalysts for the second-half surge as Davis echoed Patterson with 11 of his 13 points coming in the second period. Both Patterson and
Tomislav Miholjcic secured double-doubles as the 6'7" guard added a season-high 13 rebounds while Miholjcic recorded 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The Henderson St. defense held the league's top three-point shooting team to just 20.0 percent (5-of-25) shooting from beyond the arc while the Reddies hit six treys, including five in the second half. Overall, HSU shot 62.5 percent (20-of-32) from the floor in the second frame while the Bisons made just 14 field-goals during the same period.
The lead changed hands seven times within the first seven and a half minutes before Harding delivered the game's first big run with a 13-2 spurt to open a 27-17 lead at the 5:35 mark of the opening half. However, 11 straight from the visitors over the next four minutes allowed HSU to retake the lead before bringing the edge into intermission, 30-29.
Similar to how the evening began, the teams swapped leads four times in the opening four minutes of second-half action before a three-pointer from Davis gave Henderson the lead for good at the 16:01 mark. The triple led to HSU's own 13-2 run to open the red-and-gray's biggest lead of the game up to that point, 45-36.
The Bisons closed the gap once more with back-to-back three-point plays, but with 11:02 on the clock and the Reddies holding onto a two-point lead,
Clarence King scored six of Henderson's next 10 points to reestablish a nine-point advantage with just under nine minutes remaining.
Henderson's lead never got below five the rest of the way, even building a 15-point margin before closing the contest with the 13-point victory, 78-65. The win moves Henderson St. to 2-2 in conference play to close out 2023.
Two more non-conference games are on the docket for the Reddies this calendar year when they head to Las Vegas, Nevada, to face No. 7 Central Oklahoma and Pittsburg State in the High Desert Classic.Â
