ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - With HSU coming into the contest with 99 all-time victories over its former AIC-rival, Henderson State defeated Arkansas-Monticello for its 100th win in the series, 90-59, extending the HSU winning streak over UAM to five games. The 31-point thumping is HSU's largest margin of victory over the Boll Weevils in GAC history.
For the first time this season, the Reddies had two players contribute at least 20 points, with
Clarence King delivering a career-high 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting while
Zyon Patterson matched his career-high with 22 points.
Henderson was hitting on both sides of the ball in the first half to get the rout started. For the second straight game, HSU held its opponent to 25 or less points through the opening 20 minutes while also hitting 5-of-7 three-pointers in the same time. Additionally, the red-and-gray out-rebounded one of the league's best rebounding teams, 50-35.
A slow start to the scoring with a 6-4 HSU advantage at the first media timeout was quickly opened up with an 11-0 Reddie run before seeing a 34-13 lead at the second media break. That lead was extended to 30 as part of an additional 20-2 outburst for the home team.
For the second time in three days, Henderson sported a double-digit halftime lead. Saturday, that lead was maintained. Four points from Patterson and a converted and-1 from
Chase Farmer within the first three minutes on second-half action kept the momentum on HSU's side.
Arkansas-Monticello never got within 25 as the Reddies claimed its biggest lead of the game at the 13:27 mark of the second half, 71-35, on one of King's two three-pointers before closing out the GAC home opener with the 31-point victory.
Henderson St. (2-3, 1-1 GAC) will remain in Arkadelphia for its 2023 home finale against Arkansas Tech Saturday, Dec. 9 at 3 p.m.
