ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - After trailing by as many as 15 late in the first half, Henderson State got within one of Arkansas Tech before eventually falling to the Wonder Boys Saturday afternoon from inside the Duke Wells Center, 68-65.
Tomislav Miholjcic contributed a season-high 20 points, followed by
Clarence King with 12 points.
Malek Davis scored all 11 of his points in the second half to help fuel the late rally.
The Reddies' dug themselves into a first-half hole that showed them give up the ball nine times, allowing Arkansas Tech to score 15 points off turnovers compared to HSU's zero such points. On the offensive end, Henderson managed just one three-pointer on seven attempts.
After leading for the first four minutes and 24 seconds following an opening jumper from
Zyon Patterson, the Wonder Boys took over the game following the first media timeout at the 15:09 mark. With HSU holding an 8-6 advantage, ATU opened a 16-6 run for a 22-14 lead by the time the under-eight media horn sounded.
Arkansas Tech was able to expand that lead to 16 with just over five minutes remaining until half before Henderson began to close the gap before intermission. A 12-2 run from the red-and-gray inside the first half's final 3:22 brought the Reddies within striking distance as teams went to the locker room, 37-32.
Henderson stayed within that five-to-seven point margin until the Wonder Boys turned it on once again right around the 10-minute mark to see its first double-digit lead of the second half, 57-44. From there, the HSU defense began to tighten up, as the offense followed.
A quick 12-3 spurt from the home team, including back-to-back triples from
Ken Lewis and Davis, handed the game its closest margin since halfway through the opening 20 minutes with 5:51 remaining in regulation, 60-56. With Tech only able to add to its lead with free-throws, HSU continued to cut away at the deficit with 62 seconds left, 66-65.
The Reddies had three chances to take the lead, but two good defensive plays from Arkansas Tech maintained the lead behind a pair of three-throws as it left the Duke Wells Center with the 68-65 victory.
Henderson State (2-4, 1-2 GAC) will hit the hardwood one last time in 2023 when it heads to Searcy, Arkansas, to take on Harding. The time and date for the battle with the Bisons is currently to be determined.
