CLEVELAND, Miss. - On the first full day of events at the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championships, Henderson State's women set the school record in the 200 medley relay while
Lamar Taylor set a pool and school record in his 50 yard freestyle prelim swim.
The Red Wave men, who are vying for their first NSISC Championship since the 2004-05 season, are currently two points back of first-place Delta State. The women are in third behind West Florida and Delta State.
After the 800 free relay kicked off the Championships yesterday with the Red Wave men taking second while the Red Wave women took fifth, the first full day of events showed
Bianca Santiago placing fourth in the 200 IM, touching the wall at 2:06.23, followed by teammate
Emma Jorgensen at 2:06.32.
Following the 200 IM came a pair of victories on both sides, first with the 50 yard free. Pozvai, who held the third fastest 50 free time in NCAA Division II coming into the meet, beat her best time by three hundredths of a second, topping the podium at 22.59.
Taylor, who actually broke the pool and HSU record with his 50 free prelim swim with a blistering time of 19.10 for the fastest time in the nation, followed Pozvai's performance by matching his season-best time of 19.24 as two other Red Wave filled out the Top-5 with
Jack Armstrong (19.57) getting second while
Jase Pinckney (20.33) earned fifth. Armstrong's prelim time of 19.49 was the second fastest time in the country behind his counterpart.
The final event of the night was the 200 medley relay as both HSU quartets showed out. Pozvai earned her second win of the night with
Jessica Bongfeldt,
Isabelle Andrews and
Mackenzie Kester beating Delta State's second-place team by just over three tenths of a second at 1:41.67. That time is currently the second fastest time in DII.
Henderson's men's 200 medley relay teams got first with Taylor,
Jaren Tippett, Pinckney and
Tim Holt posting a time of 1:28.01. Holt swam his final 50 free leg in 19.57 to defeat the Statesmen's runner-up bunch by nine tenths of a second.
The second full day of NSISC Championship competition will begin tomorrow morning with the prelims, followed by the finals of the morning's events at 5 p.m.Â
