CLEVELAND, Miss. - With one day remaining at the New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference Championships, the Henderson State Red Wave men have 668 points, trailing first-place Delta State by 46 points. The Red Wave women are in third with 457 points, including a 108-point cushion on fourth-place Ouachita Baptist.
Five more school records fell on the second-to-last day of the Championships; Three on the men's side, two on the women's. In addition to HSU's records, another conference and pool record was toppled.
Kicking off the record-breaking events was the 100 yard back, with
Kiara Pozvai and
Lamar Taylor topping the podium for each side. Pozvai touched the wall first at 54.19, setting a new school record while also posting the third fastest time in NCAA Division II.
Madalyn Hall placed fourth with a time of 57.74.
Taylor followed Pozvai's performance with his own program-best swim, out-swimming Delta State's second-place swimmer by one and a half seconds with a time of 46.88 for the fourth fastest time in DII. The junior sprinter now owns four of the five fastest times in the 100 back in school history.
Following suit with the record events was both 100 breaststroke times as
Jessica Bongfeldt touched at 1:03.40 in the prelims to set the new school record before finishing in third with a final time of 1:03.94.
Jaren Tippett took after Bongfeldt's example, defeating Ouachita Baptist's runner-up swimmer by one hundredths of a second for a record-breaking 55.15 time. In the same event,
Oscar Patten (56.12) and
Mark Eberhard (56.13) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Pozvai,
Isabelle Andrews,
Emily Chen and
Mackenzie Kester finished off the podium visits for the women with a second-place finish in the 200 free relay after posting a time of 1:33.09. Armstrong,
Jase Pinckney,
Tim Holt and Taylor set the conference, pool and school record in the 200 free relay, beating the second-place team by nearly three and a half seconds with a time of 1:18.89, which also serves as the third fastest time in DII. Taylor's final 50 free leg was completed in 18.90 seconds to claim the record.  Â
Tomorrow will be the final day of competition for the 2023 NSISC Championships. Both Red Wave teams will have the 100 free, the 200 back and the 200 breast to make up their respective point differentials. Pozvai, Armstrong and Taylor are first, 11th and 26th in the nation in the 100 free, respectively. Taylor does own the school record with a 43.47 100 free, which would serve as the fifth fastest in the country this year.
