Softball Sweeps Southwest Baptist on Day One of the HSU/OBU Tournament

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Henderson State softball program came from behind in both games to sweep Southwest Baptist in the doubleheader on day one of the HSU/OBU Tournament.
 
GAME ONE: HSU 7, SBU 2
Southwest Baptist held Henderson scoreless through four innings and were able to add runs in the second and fourth to take a 2-0 lead.
 
Henderson strung together multiple hits to load the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Katelyn McMahan gave the Reddies the lead with one swing, blasting a grand slam over the center field wall, 4-2.
 
Abbie Moore extended HSU's advantage in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run, and Brooke Johnson continued to show the team's power from behind the plate, hitting HSU's third homer of the game to go up 7-2.
 
McMahan pitched a complete game, striking out three batters on 29 plate appearances, and gave up six hits. Moore was 2-3 at the plate with two RBIs and a home run.
 
GAME TWO: HSU 7, SBU 6
Presley Applegate got the start in the circle for game two and began the top of the first, striking out the side. Kaitlyn O'Quinn showed her base running abilities in the bottom half, stealing second and third after reaching on a single. The Reddies could not score O'Quinn as the first ended 0-0.
 
O'Quinn's second hit of the game went for extra bases in the bottom of the third after hitting a double up the middle. Madison Treutlein scored O'Quinn from second on a single to tie the game 1-1. Applegate struck out two of the three batters faced in the fourth to register her fifth strike out of the game.

The Reddies got a leadoff walk to start the bottom of the fifth as O'Quinn made it to first for the third time and stole second to get in scoring position. Moore advanced O'Quinn from second on a double to left center to take the lead 2-1. Both teams scored runs in the sixth inning as Henderson held a one-run advantage, 3-2.
 
With two outs in the top of the seventh, Southwest Baptist scored four runs to take the lead 6-3. The Bearcats got their third run of the game off a double through the right side to advance the runner on third to home plate. An HSU error resulted in SWU getting its fourth run before adding two more off a double.

Henderson had runners on first and second with one out to start the bottom of the seventh. McMahan worked a walk to load the bases, and Treutlein got a free pass to first, scoring the runner on third as the Reddies trailed 6-4. Erika Bittinger grounded out to first base for the second out of the inning but moved the runners up, scoring HSU's fifth run of the game.
 
With two outs and runners on second and third, true freshman Raylee Carey stepped up to the plate and hit a walk-off double to win the game 7-6 for Henderson.
 
The Reddies conclude the HSU/OBU Tournament tomorrow with a doubleheader against Central Missouri beginning at 10 a.m.
