ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State ends the HSU/OBU Tournament 3-1 after splitting the series with Central Missouri, winning the first game 4-0 and falling in the second game 8-0 to the Jennies.
GAME ONE: HSU 4, UCM 0
Brooke Johnson started in the circle for game one against the Jennies and threw a complete game shutout, picking up her second win of the season. The Rockwall, Texas native faced 24 batters in 7.0 innings and gave up three hits, zero runs and three strikeouts.
While Johnson kept the Central Missouri batters at bay, the Reddies' bat went to work in the bottom of the first, starting with
Abbie Moore, who batted in
Justine Burch on a double through the left side. Moore made it home on a bad throw from the UCM catcher while stealing third to put HSU up 2-0.
Kaitlyn O'Quinn singled in the bottom of the third and advanced to second on a Moore flyout. Johnson moved O'Quinn to third before a McMahan bunt sent the runner on second home on a Jennies' throwing error.
Josie Copeland grounded out to the shortstop, but Johnson was able to advance from third to home on the throw to score the Reddies their fourth run of the game, 4-0.
GAME TWO: UCM 8, HSU 0
After three quick outs in the top of the first, Henderson got a lead-off single from Burch. The Greenbrier, Ark. native made it to third on a passed ball from UCM with two outs. Burch would be stranded after Johnson popped up to center field.
The Jennies strung together hits in the top of the second to score two runs and take an early lead, 2-0. UCM added another run two innings later on a ground out that allowed the runner on third to make it home during the throw.
The Jennies took control of the game late in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs. Most of the damage was done on one hit as a UCM batter hit a three-run homer to extend its lead to 8-0. In the bottom half, Henderson got two runners on the base path but could not score any runs.
Henderson State (6-6, 0-0) begins GAC play in its next outing as Northwestern Oklahoma State visits Dee White Field for a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 24, starting at 3 p.m.
