WEATHERFORD, Okla. - Henderson State completed a season sweep over Southwestern Oklahoma State, defeating the Lady Bulldogs 62-57 inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
Henderson (13-9, 10-6) had to defend a late rally in the fourth period by SWOSU, who brought the game within six points after the Reddies had led by as much as 17 in the third quarter.
Gracie Raby led the team with 18 points and was one of nine players to make a basket.
JJ Eddens recorded a season-high ten points and was 5-7 from the field with four rebounds. HSU shot 39.7 percent from the field and won the battle at the glass, out-rebounding SWOSU 48-to-40.
Southwestern Oklahoma State was on the front foot early in the first period, scoring the first three baskets to take a 6-0 lead. After SWOSU's early flurries, it was all Henderson for the next three minutes as they outscored the Lady Bulldogs 14-3 to take its first lead of the game, 14-9.
In that run,
Brynlee Huggins made back-to-back triples and
JJ Eddens made three straight jump shots.
Bobbi Bazzle capped off HSU's run with a layup to give the Reddies a 16-13 advantage after one period.
Henderson did not lose a beat at the start of the second quarter, going on an 8-0 run to extend its lead to 22-13. The Reddies cooled off, allowing the Lady Bulldogs to find their range at the end of the period with a 9-0 run to cut HSU's advantage. A triple and layup from Raby in the final minute ended the half with Henderson up 34-26.
At halftime, Raby led the team with 11 points, while Huggins had nine after going 3-5 from beyond the arc. The Reddies shot 40.0 percent from the field as a team compared to the Lady Bulldogs, who only converted 26.3 percent of their shots.
Abbie Jiles, who was held scoreless in the first 20 minutes, recorded seven points in the third quarter as the Reddies began to pull away from the Lady Bulldogs. Henderson outscored SWOSU 18-11 in the period and shot an impressive 61.5 percent from the field.
The
Reddies held their largest lead of the game in the third quarter, going up by 17, 52-35. SWOSU would score one more basket before the period ended to trail 52-37 heading into the final frame.
The Lady Bulldogs clawed back into the game in the fourth period bringing the game within six points after outscoring the Reddies 13-4 with 4:18 left in the final quarter. HSU leaned on its veterans
Sonni Martin and
Ashley Farrar to help close out the game as the pair combined for six points in the closing minutes to help secure a 63-57 win.
Henderson State resumes action on the road Saturday, Feb. 10 at 1 p.m. when they face Northwestern Oklahoma State.
