Late Push by Southeastern Downs HSU in Game One

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – A four-run inning in the sixth and one run in the seventh proved to be the difference makers for Southeastern Oklahoma State as Henderson State fell to the Savage Storm 8-6 in game one of the series.

HSU (13-15, 5-7) had a late push in the seventh inning down four but fell short after scoring two runs on back-to-back sacrifice flyouts before the final out coming on a tag out at first base.

Abbie Moore led the team with two hits and recorded RBIs, while Kaitlyn O'Quinn was 2-4 at the plate and scored a run. In the circle, Brooke Johnson had the longest outing after coming in for Katelyn McMahan and went 4.0 innings and gave up one run on three hits and logged four punchouts.

Henderson trialed early to start the contest as SE scored two runs on three hits to begin the first frame, but the Reddies responded in the bottom of the second to take their first lead off three runs.

Mistakes by the Savage Storm pitcher put Brooke Johnson on second with zero outs after a hit-by-pitch and wild pitch. A single by Justine Burch put runners on the corners, and a second hit batter by the SE pitcher loaded the bases. Moore scored the first run on a walk before two ground outs put HSU ahead 3-2.

Johnson came in for relief for Katelyn McMahan at the start of the second inning and gave Henderson two scoreless frames, and worked her way out of a bases-loaded situation in the top of the third.

Both sides traded runs in the fourth as the Reddies continued to hold a one-run advantage. Southeastern Oklahoma State took command in the sixth inning, adding four runs to its score to jump ahead 7-4.

Back-to-back hits from Josie Copeland and O'Quinn had runners on second and third with no outs to begin the bottom half of the seventh inning. Sacrifice flyouts from McMahan and Johnson scored the pair, but pinch-runner Crysta Larey would be caught out trying to advance to second for the final out of the game.

Henderson State will look to force a rubber match in the first game of two tomorrow afternoon, beginning at 12 p.m. at Dee White Field.
