Reddies Split Doubleheader with the Savage Storm

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – In the final two games of the weekend series, Henderson State splits the twin bill with Southeastern Oklahoma State. The Savage Storm got the better of HSU in the first game, winning 6-0, but the Reddies bounced back with a 6-4 victory in the final contest.

Abbie Moore led the bats in game one with one hit on two plate appearances, while Katelyn McMahan was 2-3 in the batter's box and drove in one run and scored one. Brooke Johnson threw a complete game in the day's second contest and recorded five punchouts and zero walks to get her fifth win of the season.

GAME ONE: SE 6, HSU 0
The Savage Storm jumped to an early lead to begin the second game of the series, scoring three runs on four hits. Savannah Carrigan lasted two-thirds of the opening frame, and Presley Applegate came in to get the final out of the first.

Hits were a premium for Henderson as the team was held hitless for five innings before Abbie Moore recorded the team's first knock in the bottom of the sixth. HSU came close to scoring in the bottom of the second when Madison Treutlein reached on a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch but would be stranded after back-to-back outs.

Southeastern Oklahoma State added a single run in the fifth and two more in the top of the seventh to extend its advantage to 6-0. A leadoff hit by Treutlein and a walk from Kaylin Kauffman put runners on first and second with one out to start the bottom half of the seventh. The Savage Storm would work out of the jam to close the game with two consecutive outs.

GAME TWO: HSU 6, SE 4
Like the other two contests, Southeastern Oklahoma State got a fast start, scoring runs in the second and third innings to take a 3-0 lead. After surrendering three scores in two frames, Brooke Johnson gave the Reddies three scoreless innings.

Henderson started the bottom half of the third with back-to-back walks and loaded the bases on a Raylee Carey single. The first run of the inning came on a flyout before a single up the middle from Katelyn McMahan scored another. Two more runs crossed on a throwing error by the SE shorts stop, who missed the first baseman and threw the ball into the away dugout.

Leading by just one heading into the bottom of the sixth, 4-3, the Reddies looked to add insurance runs to extend their advantage. A leadoff single off the bat of McMahan, followed by a two-run blast from Johnson, gave Henderson breathing room, going up 6-3 heading into the top of the seventh.

The Savage Storm made things interesting in the final frame, scoring a run to cut the deficit to 6-4 and had a runner on third with one out. Johnson got a strikeout for the second out of the inning before Southeastern Oklahoma State's final out came on a ground out to the third base to secure a 6-4 win.

Henderson State (14-16, 6-8) travels to Tahlequah, Okla. to face Northeastern State in a midweek doubleheader on Tuesday, Mar. 21, starting at 2 p.m.
