Taylor Wins 50 Freestyle National Championship

FINAL RESULTS

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - In just two seasons of leading the Henderson State Red Wave, head coach Scotty Serio has delivered the program its first individual national champion since 2010 and the fourth in the Division II era.

Lamar Taylor, a junior from Freeport, Bahamas, came into the championships as the No. 1 overall seed in the 50-yard freestyle and left as the 2023 National Champion after posting a 19.04 time. Taylor is the first men's national champion since Zach Interrante won the 100 butterfly in 2010.

In addition to Taylor's championship run, Jack Armstrong, Kiara Pozvai and the women's 200 medley relay earned All-American status, placing Top-8 in each of their respective events. An HSU school record also fell in the process.

After the morning's prelim swim, Taylor sat with the second best time of 19.24, behind fellow-Red Wave Jack Armstrong, who opened with a 19.21. With the duo paired side-by-side on the final swim, Taylor claimed the victory before Armstrong (19.30) edged out the third-place swimmer by two-hundredths of a second to claim the one-two finish for Henderson.

Prior to Taylor and Armstrong sweeping the top of the podium in the 50 free, Kiara Pozvai looked to make to it back-to-back years with top-eight finishes. The true sophomore from Keszthely, Hungary did just that, finishing fourth in the 50 free with a 22.70 time. Her day was not done, however.

Taylor, Pozvai, Armstrong 50 free Nationals

Pozvai took to the 200 medley relay as Jessica Bongfeldt, Isabelle Andrews and Mackenzie Kester joined the two-time All-American to close out the night. The Red Wave quartet claimed a new school record and garnered 30 points in the process after placing fourth with a time of 1:41.67.

Women's 200 medley relay fourth place

The second full day of competition at the 2023 National Championships will begin with Andrews taking on the 100 butterfly, followed by Armstrong and Pinckney in the 100 fly. After Pozvai finishes off the individual HSU swimmers in the 200 free, both 400 medley relays will finish off the night.
