Baseball Outlasts Bisons for Doubleheader Split

SEARCY, Ark. - Henderson State used some extra-inning goodwill in game two of the day's doubleheader against Harding to split the twin bill. After falling 7-5 in the first contest, the Reddies took the originally-scheduled seven-inning meeting, 3-2.

Kaden Argenbright, Charles Hoof and Logan Cowart each saw three hits on the day, while all three for Argenbright came in the first contest. Jacob Carroll continued on his four-RBI midweek performance with a pair of RBIs in the latter game.

Henry Coppens (2-1) earned the win in relief in the 3-2 victory, holding Harding hitless while striking out five Bisons to just one walk in 2.2 innings of work. Cade Tucker earned his fifth save of the season with his showign in the bottom of the ninth.

Henderson St. (20-13, 11-9) will go for the series win tomorrow when it takes on the rubber match from Jerry Moore Field Sunday, Apr. 2 at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE: Harding 7, Henderson State 5
An Argenbright double to score Rice put HSU ahead early 1-0, before the Bisons opened up the contest with four runs in the home-half of the first with the 4-1 lead. Scoring stalled over the next five innings before Harding added another three runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend its advantage to 7-1.

The Reddies were able to get some offense going in the seventh with a Jacob Carroll two-out single to score a pair of runs to continue his big week at the plate. Relief pitcher Owen Vanthillo kept Henderson with four runs in the bottom of the seventh before another two runs in the eighth threatened Harding's lead at 7-5.

With Vanthillo delivering another scoreless half inning in the eighth, Henderson was able to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth before a strikeout finished the comeback.

GAME TWO: Henderson State 3, Harding 2 (9 innings)
Both pitchers held their opponents scoreless through the first three frames before it was the HU's turn to get on the board first. A solo home run from the Bisons' right fielder put the home team ahead 1-0 for one inning. A Greyson Stevens two-out double in the sixth scored Colton Patterson to knot things up at 1-all.

Moments later, Harding retook the lead with a run in the sixth as the doubleheader sweep stood just three outs away. After a Luke Farrar walk, with the two outs facing the Reddies in the seventh, a wild pitch on a swinging strike yielded a Carroll base appearance before Cowart took advantage of the pitching error with single through the right side to score Farrar for the game-tying run.

With the game moving to extra innings, Harding was able to put two on the bases before pitcher winning pitcher Coppens stranded the pair of Bisons with a strikeout to move play to the ninth frame.

A pair of hits and a throwing error from the HU pitcher put he Reddies ahead for the final time in the ninth for the visitor's first lead of the day since the first inning of game one. After a Carroll bunt single, a Cowart single and a Patterson fielder's choice put HSU ahead, 3-2.

Closer Cade Tucker came to the mound for the final at-bat as he claimed his fifth save of the season, completing the win with a ground out back to him before releasing a shout of triumph as Henderson evened the series at a game a piece.
