ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Henderson State outscored Arkansas-Monticello 4-3 across the final eight innings, but a six-spot in the first for UAM put the Reddies behind the eight ball early on as the Boll Weevils came away with the game-one victory, 9-4.
Henderson still managed to string together 10 hits, six of which came from
Greyson Stevens (3-for-5) and
Louis Holt (3-for-5). Two of Stevens' hits went for doubles while Holt claimed one two-base hit, though the comeback did not come to fruition as HSU left 13 runners on base.
Stevens' pair of doubles brought his career doubles count to 52 as he is now tied with Robert Gilbert (2007-10) for the most career doubles in program history. Stevens already owns the career record for hits, home runs and RBIs.
The Reddies held Monticello hitless for the last four innings as pitcherÂ
Blake Pennington went 3.0 innings after facing just 10 batters, recording two strikeouts to one walk.
Ethan Perry relieved Pennington for the final UAM at-bat, where he delivered a strikeout and a walk.
The Boll Weevils opened play with seven of their first eight batters getting on base with a hit or walk as UAM scored six runs on six hits before the first half-inning was even retired. Henderson was able to strand two UAM base runners, but the damage had been done.
A six-run hole turned into a nine-run pit to climb out of for Henderson before HSU put a dent in the deficit with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. After Pennington began his outing in the top of the sixth with a three up, three down inning, Holt delivered his double to score
Colton Patterson and
Kaden Argenbright.
Another three Boll Weevils came and went in order in the seventh before another run brought the score to 9-3. One more run in the eighth off Stevens' one of two doubles cut the margin to five, though another two Reddie runners were left on the base pads to mark the game's final tally, 9-4.
Henderson St. (21-15, 12-10 GAC) will return to Clyde Berry Field for a doubleheader against Arkansas-Monticello, with first pitch of game two of the series set for 1 p.m.Â
