Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader, Takes Series from UAM

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Henderson State sweeps the final two games against Arkansas-Monticello in the doubleheader to take the series at Clyde Berry Field.

Luke Rice finished the twin bill 3-6 at the plate with two RBIs and a home run , while Jacob Carroll was 3-4, including a perfect 2-2 in game one, with three RBIs and a home run.

GAME ONE: HSU 4, UAM 3
Runs and hits were a premium to start the second game of the series as both teams were held scoreless through five innings, and Arkansas-Monticello had the only hits in the game at that point with three. However, things would change in the sixth frame after UAM put up a three-run inning to strike first.

Arkansas-Monticello recorded four hits on nine batters sent to the plate. A double brought the first run in before back-to-back singles scored two more runs to put the Weevils ahead 3-0. The Reddies also put a run on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the sixth as Cade Tucker hit a solo shot to left-center field for Henderson's first hit of the game, 3-1.

The Reddies tied the game in the bottom of the seventh off the bat of Jacob Carroll, who continues to see the ball well a the plate, blasting a two-run home run after Colton Patterson reached first on an error. Carroll's day at the plate was not over, as the catcher hit a walk-off single to left field to score Patterson from second to win 4-3 and tie the series 1-1.

GAME TWO: HSU 6, UAM 5
Back-to-back singles in the top of the first by Arkansas-Monticello put the Reddies under pressure early in the rubber match. The pair of runners would score after two more hits by the Weevils to jump ahead 2-0. Henderson responded in the bottom half with a solo shot off the bat of Luke Rice to cut UAM's lead to 2-1.

Both sides were held scoreless in the second and third innings before things picked up again in the top of the fourth. Similar to the first frame, UAM was able to string together hits to score three more runs and extend its lead to 5-1. The Reddies kept close with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth with a single from Tucker and a sacrifice fly out from Patterson, 5-3.

The Weevils were their own worst enemy in the bottom of the sixth as two crucial runs for HSU crossed on mistakes by UAM's pitcher. With two outs, Patterson hit an RBI single to right center to score Greyson Stevens, who reached first on an error by the first baseman. Dillon Thomas hit a single through the right side on the following at-bat to place runners on the corners.

UAM's second mistake of the frame came on a ball four pitch that got away from the catcher on a wild pitch allowing Patterson to score from third and move the runners up. Another wild pitch that was spiked in the ground scored the go-ahead run on third to give HSU its first lead of the game, 6-5.

Tucker came in to pitch for the final three outs in the top of the seventh and was lights out, retiring the side on three consecutive ground outs. Henderson St. will face rivals Ouachita Baptist on Monday, Apr. 10 at 6 p.m.
