ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Henderson State could not overcome Ouachita Baptist's 16 three-pointers Thursday night as the Reddies fell inside Bill Vining Arena, 91-85.
The Tigers made 66.7 percent of tries from beyond the arc, hitting 16-of-24, while junior guard Emorie Knox tied an NCAA Division II record after going 10-for-10 from long distance. Knox had only made 28 threes through 15 games coming into the night.
Tomislav Miholjcic was a force in the paint for HSU, scoring 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting while also adding six free-throws. With the big man's efforts, the Reddies doubled up Ouachita Baptist in points-in-the-paint, 48-24.
Hendeson State largely shot well on the evening, making 46.3 percent (31-of-67) of its field-goals, including 57.1 percent (20-of-35) in the second half. However, only four of those field-goals came from beyond the arc.
In the opening 20 minutes of action, OUA made eight three-pointers while Henderson made just 11 field-goals total. After the Reddies opened a 17-8 lead with a 9-0 run at the second media break, the Tigers proceeded to score the next 12 as the red-and-gray saw a near-four and a half minute scoring drought.
The nine-point halftime lead for Ouachita quickly grew to 14 as eight of OUA's first nine second-half field-goals were three-pointers. Henderson remained competitive, responding with buckets of its own, albeit from inside the perimeter.
The Reddies were able to cut the deficit down to four with just over six minutes remaining, but another 8-2 Tiger run re-established a 10-point advantage. The lead remaining largely in tact over he course of the final minutes as HSU fell to Ouachita Baptist, 91-85.
Henderson St. will return from across the street when Southern Arkansas comes to the Duke Wells Center Saturday, Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. in what will be the season's second meeting between the two in-state rivals. The Muleriders won the first meeting in Magnolia, 67-66.Â
