Henderson Men Tripped Up by Southern Arkansas, 72-71

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - For the second time this season, Henderson State lost by one point to Southern Arkansas. Saturday, after trailing for the majority of the contest, HSU's late jab at the ultimate lead fell short, 72-71.

The second meeting between the former AIC rivals held 15 lead changes and 10 ties. The Muleriders made two more field-goals than the Reddies and four more three-pointers to assist in the one-point victory.

Tomislav Miholjcic recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds. Malek Davis led the scoring for HSU with 22 points and five of the red-and-gray's nine assists.

Davis started off hot, scoring Henderson's first seven points of the game. Neither team saw a lead bigger than four until the Reddies mounted a 7-0 run to open a 25-20 advantage. Southern Arkansas responded with a 13-2 run for the game's biggest lead on either side, 35-27.

After posting the five-point edge, Henderson only managed nine more points over the final 6:31 of the first half to give SAU a 41-34 lead at the break. That lead grew to 11 just over three minutes into the second half before HSU began to claw its way back.

At 50-39, the Reddies spouted off the next 12 points to see its first lead since the 6:14 mark of the opening period at 51-50 with 13:13 on the game clock. From that point on, the game saw seven lead changes and six ties, until the final deadlock at 2:06.

After a Southern Arkansas triple tied it at 69, a Miholjcic layup was answered by another Mulerider trey with 60 seconds left in regulation to make it 72-71. After an SAU shot-clock violation at the 15-second mark gave Henderson the ball with a shot at a game winner, Davis' pull-up at the top of the key was blocked as the final seconds ticked away.

Henderson State (6-11, 5-7 GAC) will makes its second-to-last regular season Oklahoma road trip when it heads to Shawnee, Okla. for a date with Oklahoma Baptist Thursday, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. before meeting Southern Nazarene Saturday, Feb. 3 at 3 p.m.
