ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Henderson State secured its fifth winning season in a row on Saturday with a 42-7 victory over Arkansas-Monticello.
Cayden Davis caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Edwards to close out a low-scoring first quarter. The Boll Weevils evened things up in the second with an 80-yard scoring drive that was capped off by a rushing touchdown from Glen Cage. Jody Easter returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards for a score: his second kick return touchdown of the season. Timieone Jackson hauled in a seven-yard scoring strike from Andrew Edwards to give the Reddies a 21-7 lead heading into halftime. HSU would match its first-half scoring efforts and hold UAM scoreless over the last 30 minutes of game time to provide the final result.
Edwards posted his fourth straight game with 200 or more passing yards, going 26-of-33 for 232 yards and four touchdowns through the air. He added 79 yards on the ground, including a 54-yard run.
Jeremiah Davis tallied 111 rushing yards on just 13 attempts for an average of 8.5 yards per carry.
Robbie Williams III paced the Reddie receiving corps with seven catches that went for 77 yards and a score. His touchdown was the result of a 14-yard connection from Edwards. The Tyler, Texas, native has now posted 60 or more receiving yards in three straight games, making him the first Henderson player to do so this season.
Davis produced 62 yards on three receptions.
Micah Greene also had three receptions, which turned into 32 yards and a touchdown. His 17-yard score opened up the Reddies scoring efforts in the third quarter.
On defense, the Reddies consistently swarmed UAM's backfield, recording 11 tackles for loss and six sacks as unit.
Derriun Thompson led the team with nine tackles, including a tackle for loss.
Gary Lewis put up a team-best three tackles as well as half of a sack in the win. The other half of the sack was credited to Ty Thomas.
Jakobe Shell became the first HSU player to post two sacks in a game this season.
Jordan Owens, Halid Djibril, and Trenton Moore also contributed a sack apiece. Catrell Wallace added an additional tackle for loss, while Ryan Hampton provided half of a TFL.
In the secondary, Jaylen Powell and Bryant Hammond II both collected interceptions in the fourth quarter.
Axel Robertson gave one of his best efforts of the season by averaging 45.5 yards per punt on four attempts. All four of his punts landed inside the 20-yard line, with his longest effort going 53 yards.
Next week, the Reddies will make their final (and longest) road trip of the season when they trek to Alva, Oklahoma, for a date with Northwestern Oklahoma State. Kickoff at Ranger Field is set for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 2.
