ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Henderson State guards Jadah Pickens and Brynlee Huggins scored a combined 52 points en route to a 83-73 victory over Delta State in Wednesday's home opener at the Duke Wells Center.
The Reddies shot a combined 53 percent and 57 percent as a team in the second and third quarters, respectively. HSU also made nearly 48 percent of its three-point attempts on the night.
Pickens posted a team-best 30 points: the second-most points she has scored in a game in her career (trailing only a 35-point showing in last year's GAC semifinal versus Southern Nazarene). The graduate student from Conway, Arkansas, recorded three assists and two steals as well.
Huggins put up a career-high 22 points in Henderson's first win of the season. She made five of her ten shot attempts from beyond the arc and went a perfect three-for-three from the free-throw line.
Sam Basson displayed quick hands against the Lady Statesmen, swiping a game-high four steals. Additionally, she scored a career-best 14 points while tying her personal record of eight rebounds in a single game. The Allen, Texas, native was also one of three Reddies to post three assists during Wednesday night's game (joining Pickens and Tristin Keller).
Bobbi Bazzle recorded double-digit boards for the second game in a row. She collected six of her 11 rebounds - the most of any HSU player - on the offensive glass.
Next up, the Reddies will head to Tahlequah, Oklahoma, for a meeting with Northeastern State. Tip-off at the NSU Event Center is slated for 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20.
