Reddies Survive Late Scare from Southern Arkansas, Win 79-76

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Reddies improved to 8-3 with a 79-76 victory at home versus Southern Arkansas.

Dominance near the basket proved key for the Reddies, with Henderson scoring 48 points in the paint compared to just 16 for Southern Arkansas. Matthew Mayes led all scorers with 18 points to go along with three steals and two blocks. Mayes has scored 12 or more points in every GAC outing this season.

Tim McDonald had his best game since facing Winona State, scoring 14 points in just 20 minutes. He also hauled in eight rebounds.

In the first half, HSU held the Muleriders to just 28 percent from the field. The Reddies struck first in the first half, taking an eight-point lead with 14:32 remaining in the opening period. The team extended its lead to 10 with a Mayes fast break dunk. Henderson went into the half up seven.

The Reddies did not falter early in the second half, extending their lead to 14 with a McDonald jumper in the paint. After a three-pointer by Rondae Hill at the 9:31 mark, HSU was held scoreless from the field until McDonald made a layup with 3:24 remaining. The Muleriders cut the Reddies' lead to just one point following a layup with 20 seconds remaining, but two made free throws from Hill secured the win.

With the win, the Reddies improved to 4-1 in GAC play and third in the Great American Conference.
