Men's Basketball Edged Out in Overtime Versus OUA, 92-87

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Free-throws and late-game mental errors hurt the Reddies Thursday night as Henderson State lost in overtime to Ouachita Baptist, 92-87.

The red-and-gray missed 12 free-throws on the evening, including eight in the second half, and committed a technical foul with 18 seconds left in regulation to help the Tigers climb back from being 13 points down in the second half.

Malek Davis scored a team-high 20 points on 6-of-14 shooting and 5-of-10 from three-point range while also adding three free-throws, along with dishing out six assists. Clarence King backed up Davis with 19 thanks to 10-of-13 at the charity stripe while Tomislav Miholjcic shot a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor and 3-of-7 from the line for 17 points.

Ouachita Baptist raced out to a 12-2 lead, holding the advantage for much of the first half minus a few HSU runs that tied up the score. At the break, the teams were deadlocked at 35-35. Despite the Reddies having out-shot the Tigers on the floor, 10 first-half turnovers for Henderson kept the game at a tie.

Henderson State solved the turnover problem in the second half and overtime, committing just five more over the game's final 25 minutes. That change aided the Reddies through the first half of the second period as HSU scored the first six points of the latter 20-minute frame.

The lead eventually grew to 13 at the 12:21 mark, but the lead steadied around 8-10 points for the next four minutes of game time as Ouachita Baptist refused to go away. Eventually, OUA cut the lead to one at 68-67 before tying the score at 75-75 with just over a minute left in regulation.

A heads up controlled tip on an offensive glass from Tim McDonald allowed Miholjcic to score the go-ahead layup with 50 seconds left, 77-75, before the Reddie defense forced a shot-clock violation on the other end.

With 18 seconds left, the Tigers were forced to foul, sending HSU to the line with an opportunity to open a two-possession lead. Upon the foul, the Reddies committed a technical foul, which also sent Ouachita to the line. With both players making both free-throws, the game remained a one-possession difference.

A foul on the other end resulted in two made free-throws for the Tigers with five seconds left as the game was sent to overtime. From there, Henderson failed to make another field-goal, getting all eight of its overtime points from the free-throw line, whereas Ouachita Baptist went 4-of-6 from the floor during the same time, on top of making four free-throws, to leave the Duke Wells Center with the win, 92-87.

Henderson State (7-15, 6-11 GAC) will take to the road for the next four games, beginning Saturday, Feb. 17 when it heads to Monticello, Arkansas, to take on the Boll Weevils in a 3 p.m. tip from the Steelman Fieldhouse.
