MONTICELLO, Ark. - Henderson State's five-game winning streak against Arkansas-Monticello was snapped Saturday as HSU fell to the Boll Weevils on the road, 74-67.
The Reddies, who were without starter
Clarence King, fell behind by 10 at halftime and could not overcome UAM's lead late in the game despite shooting 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from the floor in the latter 20 minutes.
Zyon Patterson paced the team with 21 points, aided by a 5-for-5 showing at the free-throw line, and eight rebounds.
Rece Hipp was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, including 3-for-3 from long range, for a season-high 11 points.
Arkansas-Monticello dominated points in the paint, 30-16, while posting 13 second-chance points compared to five for Henderson after the red-and-gray got out-rebounded, 34-26, including 8-3 on the offensive glass.
It was an uphill climb from the get-go for Henderson as a turnover 28 seconds into play resulted in a layup on the other end for the Boll Weevils. That lead would never leave UAM's hands.
One of the game's two ties came seconds later at 5-5, but Monticello held onto the lead the rest of the first half before seeing a 10-point advantage at the break, 38-28.
Eight minutes into the second period, HSU had cut it down to one with the margin staying between 1-3 for the next four minutes. At the 7:27 mark, the game saw its second tie, 54-54, but Arkansas-Monticello built the lead back to seven in a span of a minute and a half.
Henderson made it a one-possession game one final time, but the home-town Weevils continued to hold the Reddies at bay, 74-67. The Reddies (7-16, 6-12 GAC) will now remain on the road, taking its final Oklahoma road trip Thursday, Feb. 22 at East Central in Ada, Oklahoma.
