Patterson's Big Night Leads Reddies Past ECU, 89-86

ADA, Okla. - Zyon Patterson scored a career-high 38 points Thursday night in Ada, Oklahoma, as Henderson State came away with just its second road victory of the season, defeating East Central inside the Kerr Activities Center, 89-86.

Patterson's scoring outburst marked the most points an HSU player has scored in a single game in the Jimmy Elgas era. In addition to his 38 points on 14-of-24 shooting and 9-of-15 from the free-throw line, Patterson also pulled down 13 rebounds in a dominant display.

Tomislav Miholjcic (12) and Chase Farmer (10) were the other two Reddies to score in double figures. Malek Davis added seven points while contributing a team-high seven assists in the victory.

Henderson State delivered strong shooting performances in both halves of basketball, hitting at a 54.8 percent (17-of-31) clip before claiming 60.0 percent (15-of-25) of its field-goals in the second half to help overcome a two-point halftime deficit.

Neither team held a lead bigger than six points in the first half as there six lead changes in the opening 20 minutes. Patterson stood at 14 points in the first half as his team trailed by two at the break, 42-40.

The beginning of the second was much like the first with the lead changing hands every couple of possessions. The Reddies opened up their largest lead of the game around the 10 minute mark of second-half action as Patterson turned a one-point deficit into an eight-point advantage with eight points from Patterson in the span of 1:40.

East Central cut the lead back to one before HSU re-opened a 10-point lead with just over four minutes left to play in regulation. Unlike the first meeting between these two teams this season, HSU made five of its next six free-throws to keep the lead intact until the clock struck 0:00.

After attempting just three free-throws in the first half, an aggressive Henderson team attempted 27 freebies in the second to help ice the game away. Henderson State (8-16, 7-12 GAC) will look to build off the massive road victory when it heads to GAC-leader Southeastern Oklahoma State Saturday for a 3 p.m. tip.
