ARKADELPHIA, Ark. -
Reese Weaks delivered his best performance of his career on the mound while true freshman
Jordan Allen broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run to give Henderson State the win and the series over Northwestern Oklahoma State, 4-3.
Weaks earned a no-decision after throwing six innings while dealing out a career-high 10 strikeouts. Coming into the series finale with the Rangers, Weaks had only tallied seven strikeouts on the season.
Payton Byrd earned his second save of the weekend after inducing three fly-outs in his sole inning of work, maintaining HSU's one-run lead in the ninth following Allen's go-ahead solo shot in the eighth.
At the plate,
Nate Moore and the aforementioned Allen each recorded two hits while Allen added an RBI and two runs.
Logan Cowart led the team with two RBI on his one hit for the afternoon. Moore has now delivered a hit in 10 straight games, including back-to-back two-hit outings.
After Northwestern Oklahoma claimed the early lead with a solo home run in NWOSU's second at-bat, Cowart quickly claimed his pair of RBI with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first, scoring
Luke Rice and Allen, who had doubled two at-bats prior.
Northwestern's home run was the only hit Weaks allowed from the bump as the only other two Ranger base runners against Weaks came courtesy of a walk and a fielding error. In the second and sixth frame, the Princeton, Texas, native struck out all three batters in his career performance.
A
Mitchell Szczygiel RBI-double in the third extended Henderson's lead to 3-1, but the lead stayed as such until the seventh inning when NWOSUÂ hit a game-tying two-run home run off Szczygiel, who came in to pitch two of the last three innings.
Szczygiel remained on the bump in the eighth, allowing just one base runner before leaving the top of the eighth unscathed. In the bottom of the eighth, after Rice led off with a groundout, Allen put the Reddies in front for good with a deep shot over the left-center field wall to make it 4-3.
Byrd relieved winning-pitcher Szczygiel in the ninth as he echoed his performance in game one of the weekend series, earning the save with a quick three-up, three-down inning that handed HSU its second GAC series win of the year.
Henderson St. (8-7, 4-2 GAC) will leave Arkadelphia momentarily for a midweek contest at Union Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 4 p.m. before returning to Clyde Berry Field for a weekend showdown with Arkansas Tech Mar. 1-2.Â
