Baseball Takes Road Contest Against Union, 11-7

JACKSON, Tenn. - For the second time this season, Henderson State defeated Union University at Fesmire Baseball Field in Jackson, Tenn., 11-7.

The Reddies trailed 2-1 after three innings before scoring seven unanswered. Ryan Galvan (2-2) entered in the second inning, pitching three innings while giving up just a single run on four hits to claim the win.

True freshman Cal Jones paced Henderson's offense with three hits, including a triple and home run, as he was a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Jones recorded two RBI and Kaden Argenbright and Logan Cowart led the way with three RBI.

Mitchell Szczygiel delivered the first run for the visitors following his double in the bottom of the opening frame, advancing to third and home off a throwing error from the Union pitcher and a walk, respectively.

After Union took the 2-1 lead after the second, Galvan and Luke Carter held the Bulldogs scoreless from the third to the fifth inning as the Reddies took the lead for good in the fourth.

Two hits and a UU error in the fourth allowed Henderson to plate three runs with a two-RBI single from Cowart and an RBI-walk from Argenbright. In the fifth, Jones extended the lead to 5-2 with his first home run of the season.

Another three runs came in the sixth for HSU, despite putting the ball in play just once. Two hit-by-pitches, two walks and a wild pitch from the Bulldogs opened an 8-2 lead.

Union combined for five runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh, a run in the eighth and two final runs in the ninth confirmed the lead for the Reddies. With two on and two outs, Argenbright came through with his lone hit of the game on a two-RBI double to bring the game to its final tally, 11-7.

Henderson State (9-7, 4-2 GAC) will return to Clyde Berry Field for a three-game weekend series against Arkansas Tech. First-pitch of the in-state showdown is set for Friday, Mar. 1 at 6 p.m.
