ARKADELPHIA, Ark. -
Nick Tremblay recorded two home runs in the second game of the day's doubleheader, including an inside-the-park home run, to help Henderson State force a split in the Friday twin bill. After falling in the opener, 12-6, HSU took the second game, 6-4.
Dillon Thomas and
Mitchell Szczygiel each recorded hits in both games as Thomas is leading the clubhouse with seven hits on the season, followed by
Louis Holt with six after going 3-for-8 at the dish with hits in each contest.
Henry Coppens, after earning a save in the first weekend of the season, claimed the win in relief, throwing two hitless innings following a rain delay, allowing just three walks while claiming a strikeout.
The Reddies will return to Clyde Berry Field tomorrow for game three of the Northwest Missouri series at 12 p.m., with the final game coming Sunday at 12 p.m.
GAME 1: Northwest Missouri State 12, Henderson State 6
The Bearcats worked quickly in the first game, scoring eight runs in the first inning before HSU even had a chance to bat. A scoreless bottom of the first resulted in another three runs for NWMSU in the second for an 11-0 lead.
The Reddies cut into the lead in the home-half of the second with a four-run frame while only delivering one hit. Three straight walks to
Logan Cowart,
Landon Ervin and Holt brought in three runs before a Thomas single scored the fourth.
The slight shift in momentum was held in check as HSU did not score again until a two-run home run from true freshman
Jordan Allen brought the score to its final, 12-6.Â
GAME 2: Henderson State 6, Northwest Missouri State 4
Starting pitcher
Ryan Galvan claimed a no-decision after throwing 4.1 innings, pitching a shutout through the first three innings. In that time, Henderson State put up three runs on the scoreboard, sparked by a
Kaden Argenbright double in the first frame.
Northwest Missouri put up its first crooked numbers in the fourth and fifth inning, sandwiched around a Tremblay solo home run in the bottom of the fourth, tying it in the fifth before
Owen Vanthillo came in to relieve Galvan with the score at a deadlock, 4-4.
After a brief rain delay, with the score still tied at four in the sixth, Coppens relieved Vanthillo, working out of a jam with two Bearcats at second and third. With the big confidence boost to the team, Tremblay followed a Szczygiel single with the unconventional home run that staying in the park.
With the 6-4 lead, Northwest Missouri was able to land two more runners on base in the seventh with two outs before a fly-out to left field put the game on ice.Â
