ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - A 1-0 hole turned into an 8-1 series-winning celebration in the span of six outs as Henderson State took game three of the weekend series over former first-place Harding.
After dropping the first game of the doubleheader, the game-three victory moves HSU to 13-8 in league play and forces a three-way tie for third place in the conference standings as the baseball calendar moves to April with the GAC Tournament looming.Â
Henderson's offense managed just five hits in the day's final game, four of which came in the electric sixth inning. Also coming in the sixth were both of the Reddies' doubles to help fuel the eight-run barrage.
On the day,
Kaden Argenbright had three total hits as his hitting streak extends to a career-best 13 straight games after seeing at least one hit in every game this weekend.
Dillon Thomas and
Louis Holt each saw hits in both contests, including a pair of doubles in the finale to help ignite the late-game rally.
Henderson St. (19-16, 13-8 GAC) will remain in the thick of GAC play when it heads to Monticello, Arkansas, this weekend for a three-game series with the Arkansas-Monticello beginning Friday, Apr. 5 at 3 p.m.
GAME TWO: Harding 15, Henderson State 5
Seven of Harding's 15 runs came on home runs while 12 of the 15 runs came after the fourth inning. The Reddies got on the board first with a Harding throwing error in the bottom of the second before the Bisons used their first of four homers to tie the game up at 1-1 in the third.
That tie was quickly erased as HSU added another three runs in the third. A second Bisons home run in the fourth was met yet again by a single run in the home-half of the frame to keep the three-run advantage for the red-and-gray, 5-2.
The fifth inning is where the tide changed as Harding took the lead for good on a grand slam before another solo shot opened the game for the visitors, 8-5. The Reddies were unable to cut into the lead the rest of the way as HU an additional seven runs to even the weekend series with the 15-5 victory.
GAME THREE: Henderson State 8, Harding 1
The weekend's finale showed to be a pitcher's dual through the first five innings as the two teams combined for three hits during that stretch. The game's first run came from the visiting Bisons in the top of the sixth without logging a hit.
Now facing a 1-0 deficit, the Reddies had six outs to work with in order to keep from getting swept and drop the series after taking Friday's opener. After a lead-off hit-by-pitch and walk issued to
Cal Jones and Argenbright, respectively, two outs came and went, leaving Thomas as HSU's last chance in the Reddies' penultimate half-inning.Â
In the first game of the series, Harding brought in relief pitcher Griffin Meeker in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 4-4 game before Thomas used a two-out double, followed by Holt's single which scored the eventual game-winning run, 5-4.
Deja vù struck again for the hometown kids as Meeker was brought in for the Bisons to face Thomas who, facing a 1-ball, 2-strike count, used his second two-out double in as many days to score Jones and Argenbright for the red-and-gray's first lead of the game, 2-1.
The eerily similar story from game one for the Bisons continued with Holt's double immediately following Thomas' heroics to score pinch-runner
Nick Tremblay for the 3-1 lead. The momentum continued with five more runs coming on a wild pitch, a hit-by-pitch, two walks and two hits.
Payton Byrd (1-3) recorded his first win of the season after completing the magical late-game rally with the three final outs in the top of the eighth as the bottom half of the inning was forfeited with the victory and the series in hand.Â
