Baseball Drops Series Opener to Monticello, 11-4

MONTICELLO, Ark. - Henderson State allowed 13 hits to Arkansas-Monticello Friday afternoon as the Boll Weevils took game one of the three-game series, 11-4.

Mitchell Szczygiel paced the Reddie bats, claiming two of their total six hits, one of which was a solo home run - the second long shot of his season. Behind Szczygiel, Kaden Argenbright extended his hit streak to 14 consecutive games, finishing 1-for-5 at the dish.

Dawson Goines saw the most work on the mound for the red-and-gray, earning a no-decision after four innings of relief work, claiming three strikeouts while allowing three runs on five hits.

Arkansas-Monticello took the lead early, plating a pair of runs on UAM's fourth at-bat. Three batters later, another two runs came across the plate as HSU faced a quick 4-0 deficit.

Starting pitcher Kyle Williams settled in a bit, giving up just two hits over the next two innings while HSU got a single run back in the third off a Boll Weevil error to bring the tally to 4-1.

A single UAM run in the third met by two more in the fourth opened Monticello's biggest lead of the outing, 7-1, before another run was salvaged from the Reddies in the top of the fifth.

Over the next two innings, HSU threatened the Weevil lead with an additional two unanswered runs to make the score 7-4, but the home team finished play with four straight runs to take the opener, 11-4.

Henderson St. (19-17, 13-9 GAC) will return to Weevils Field for a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. The series finale is set to start at approximately 3 p.m.
