Box Score 2 MONTICELLO, Ark. - A late comeback fell short in the series finale as Henderson State dropped Saturday's doubleheader to Arkansas-Monticello on the road, 4-2 and 5-4.
Kaden Argenbright was lone Reddie to post hits in both games, including tallying three of HSU's total six hits in the finale. The red-and-gray out-hit UAM in the first game of the twin bill, 4-3, before seeing six base-knocks to the Weevils' nine in the latter contest.
Reese Weaks delivered the best showing from the mound on the afternoon. With the righty earning a no-decision, Weaks got the start in the first game, working 5.2 innings while allowing just one run on two hits, striking out four.
Henderson St. (19-19, 13-11 GAC) will head across the street for the second meeting of the season with Ouachita Baptist in non-conference action Tuesday, Apr. 9 at 3 p.m.
GAME TWO: Arkansas-Monticello 4, Henderson State 2
Both teams' starting pitchers kept the opposition at bay with neither club seeing a hit through the first three innings.
Cal Jones broke the game's hitting hiatus as well as the scoreless streak, hitting a fourth-inning lead-off solo home run.
After holding UAM scoreless yet again in the bottom of the fourth, Henderson added to the 1-0 lead with a
Landon Ervin two-out double in the fifth to make it 2-0. That two-run lead was held until the sixth inning.
The Boll Weevils got their first run on Weaks in the sixth, cutting HSU's lead in half, which is where it stood for one more inning. Monticello was able to overtake the Reddies in the seventh with three consecutive hit-by-pitches to claim a 4-2 advantage.
Henderson closed the game without a hit in the final four frames as UAM's four unanswered runs proved enough for Saturday's game-one win, 4-2.
GAME THREE: Arkansas-Monticello 5, Henderson State 4
Unlike the previous game, Henderson State trailed for the first six innings. A pair of two-run frames sandwiched a single run from the Reddies to see a 4-1 lead heading into the final inning.
With UAM three outs away from the series sweep, Jones started the top of the seventh with a walk followed by two singles, two more walks and a wild pitch to bring the red-and-gray within one, 4-3.
Louis Holt delivered the game-tying single as HSU still had two on with just one out against them. The threat of a lead change was quickly quieted with back-to-back fly-outs. With UAM unable to do anything in the bottom of the seventh, play went to extra innings.
After the Reddies were forced to strand three base runners in the top of the eighth, the Boll Weevils had three outs to work with to take the finale. After a hit-by-pitch and a ground out to advance the runner, a single up the middle scored the game-winning run.
