Baseball Posts Offensive Benchmarks, Sweeps SNU Series

BETHANY, Okla. - Henderson State completed its first GAC series sweep of the season Saturday, Apr. 13, beating Southern Nazarene in the series doubleheader, 15-3 and 12-6.

Across the three games, the Reddies defeated the Crimson Storm by a combined score of 49-14. 49 runs is the most runs HSU has scored in a three-game GAC series since the conference's formation in 2012.

On the day, Luke Rice also set an HSU GAC record with five walks in the first contest of the day's twin bill. Rice reached base safely 12 times in the three games, claiming four hits and working eight walks in the series.

In the weekend finale, Henderson recorded six home runs from six different players, marking the most homers in a single game since facing Southern Nazarene back in 2020 with a record eight home runs.

True freshman Jordan Allen led the Reddies at the plate on the day, tallying a combined five hits, including a double, a triple and two home runs, and five RBI. In the first game of the day, Allen sat just a single shy of hitting for the cycle.

Henderson State (22-19, 16-11 GAC) is now tied for fifth in the conference standings and is one game out of fourth. The next GAC series is Apr. 19-20 against Oklahoma Baptist at Clyde Berry Field. Before that, however, HSU will host Arkansas-Monticello in a non-conference contest Tuesday, Apr. 16 at 6 p.m.

GAME ONE: Henderson State 15, Southern Nazarene 3
Henderson scored in all but one inning, taking a 2-0 lead after two frames. The red-and-gray truly opened the game in the fourth with a four-spot. Kaden Argenbright followed a Nate Moore walk and a Luke Farrar double with a two-RBI single.

Three batters later, a fielding error scored Argenbright before a Landon Ervin sacrifice fly scored the sixth run of the game. Southern Nazarene contributed its first run of the game in the home-half of the fourth, but HSU then outscored SNU 9-2 over the next three innings.

With the Reddies holding an 8-2 lead with play moving to the seventh, one of Allen's three weekend home runs led off the stanza before five walks and three more hits later scored another six runs. One final run from the Crimson Storm proved not enough to continue play as play was called after seven innings.

GAME TWO: Henderson State 12, Southern Nazarene 6
In the previous two games, Henderson waited until late in the contest to post its big inning. In the finale, the Reddies turned a 1-1 tie to a 6-1 advantage with a five-run top of the second. Four of the five runs came courtesy of a Farrar grand slam.

Southern Nazarene delivered its biggest inning of the weekend with three runs in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to two, 6-4. The Reddies confirmed the series sweep with six more runs over the next two stanzas with the help of four home runs.

With the final score already decided after the fourth inning, 12-6, pitchers Luke Carter, Jaxson Gregg and Henry Coppens combined to pitch the final three innings, allowing just two hits while recording four strikeouts to one walk.
