Reddies Post Game-One Comeback, Split Twin Bill

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Oklahoma Baptist outscored Henderson State 13-3 in the day's first innings. The Reddies won the rest of the innings, 14-4, as both teams took a game in the afternoon's doubleheader, forcing the rubber match Monday, Apr. 22 at 12 p.m.

Kaden Argenbright extended his hitting streak to 21 games - one shy of tying the program record - as he ended his day going 4-for-6 at the plate with four runs scored and an RBI while also working two walks.

Logan Cowart matched Argenbright with with four hits while pacing the team on the afternoon with four RBI. Luke Rice added four RBI, including the go-ahead three-run home run in game one, to go with his three hits.

Baylor Brumley (1-1) earned his first win of the season in relief in the series opener while Henry Coppens recorded his fifth save of 2024, picking up the win for the Reddies after occupying the mound through the final two innings of the former contest.

GAME ONE: Henderson State 8, Oklahoma Baptist 6
Oklahoma Baptist opened its Arkadelphia trip with a bang, scoring five runs in the first four at-bats. One final run opened a 5-0 lead before HSU even came to the plate. The Reddies responded to the quick hit with three runs of their own in the opening frame to keep it a two-run contest.

Following the offensive barrage from both sides, Henderson's pitching took over. After the red-and-gray's starter was chased in the first inning, Ryan Galvan and Brumley allowed just one more run over the next six innings.

The Reddie offense was held scoreless over the next four frames, but a lead-off single from Landon Ervin in the sixth led the way for a four-spot. With two on and one out, Rice delivered just his third home run of the season and first at Clyde Berry Field to give Henderson its first lead of the afternoon, 7-5. Henderson's fifth unanswered run came in the seventh for the three-run advantage, 8-5.

Brumley, who had kept the Bison without a hit while picking up one strikeout up to that point, continued his career outing with two of his three strikeouts coming in the seventh frame to keep HSU's lead intact. Coppens matched Brumley's outing with the final two innings of work, allowing just one run while striking out four Bison for the come-from-behind 8-6 victory.

All nine Reddies in the batting order registered a hit as HSU out-hit OKBU in the series opener, 15-6, including 12-3 after the first inning.

GAME TWO: Oklahoma Baptist 11, Henderson State 9
For the second straight game, Oklahoma Baptist opened play with a big lead after half an inning. Also for the second straight game, HSU fought all the way back. In game two of the Sunday doubleheader, the Bison secured an eight-spot before the Reddies even came to the plate.

This time, Henderson was unable to cut into the lead any more than a single run in the third inning. Once again, however, the red-and-gray pitching, after having the starter excused after just two-thirds of an inning, held OKBU scoreless for the next four innings.

Facing the seven-run deficit with just nine outs to work with in the seven-inning second game, the Reddies used a seven-run bottom of the fifth as the second comeback of the day threatened. Six consecutive hits, two of which came from Cowart in the same inning, delivered the game's unprecedented first tie, 8-8.

The massive momentum shift quickly moved back to the side of the Bison after HSU walked the first two batters before an OKBU triple plated two runs before a sacrifice fly added a third as Oklahoma Baptist immediately took the lead back, 11-8.

A two-out single from Louis Holt made the score 11-9, but that was the final run of the game as Oklahoma Baptist survived another near-Reddie comeback.
