Reddies Score Late for 4-3 Series-Clinching Win Over Bison

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - A two-run home run in the top of the eighth from Oklahoma Baptist broke a tie as once again the Reddies needed to crawl out of a hole.

Once again, the comeback kids in the red-and-gray did just that, plating three runs in the bottom of the eighth before winning it in the top of the ninth, 4-3. The series finale win marked Henderson State's eighth GAC series victory of the season.

In the two games HSU won against the Bison, the Reddies held the lead for just four of the 18 total innings played. On the flip side, Oklahoma Baptist led for 11 innings. Timely hitting, clutch pitching and smart coaching moves proved to be the difference.

In Monday's finale, Luke Rice led the way at the plate with three hits for two RBI, followed by Luke Farrar with two base-knocks and the initial game-tying run in the sixth. Starting pitcher Reese Weaks earned the no-decision after seven innings of work which saw the righty allow just one run on four hits and striking out nine Bison batters.

In his final at-bat, Kaden Argenbright, who was 0-for-3 up to that point, claimed his program record-tying 22nd consecutive game with a hit, which led off Henderson's go-ahead three-run bottom of the eighth.

For the third time in the three-game series, Oklahoma Baptist struck first with a two-out RBI single in the fourth at-bat of the game. Weaks was able to keep it the sole run as the Bison 1-0 lead held for the next five innings.

Weaks and the Reddie defense did just enough to keep the game at a one-run deficit as the Bison left at least one man on base in each of the first four innings, including leaving the bases loaded in the top of the third.

The Henderson offense was unable to convert on the clutch defensive showing, however, as HSU left its own three base runners on the bags through the first four frames. The red-and-gray offense came through for the first time in the Monday afternoon contest in the bottom of the sixth with a Rice RBI single to knot things up, 1-1.

Things remained at a deadlock until the eighth inning. After a change on the mound brought Jaxson Gregg to the bump, two quick strikeouts preceded a walk and a two-run home run that looked to possibly finish things in Arkadelphia.

Facing a 3-1 hole with six outs remaining for the home team, with the Reddies having only scored one run in the first seven innings of play, that two-run deficit loomed large. But at the time when it needed it most, HSU's top hitters came through in the biggest moment.

Argenbright opened the series-defining inning with his first hit of the outing, putting him on second. Rice followed with his third hit of the afternoon to score the senior infielder. A Jordan Allen walk one batter later brought a new Bison hurler to the bump, but the momentum had shifted.

After a sacrifice bunt from Louis Holt moved Allen and Rice to second and third, respectively, pinch runners Nick Tremblay and Alex Galvan took their place on the base paths. Right on cue, Nate Moore sent a sacrifice fly to shallow center field, but it was just enough for the speedster Tremblay to make it home under the tag.

With a tied game, Galvan was gifted back-to-back wild pitches as the second pinch runner of the frame scored for the Reddies to put them ahead, 4-3, with the final two runs of the comeback coming without HSU having put a ball in play.

Payton Byrd made his second appearance of the series, three outs away from a series victory. Byrd induced a ground-out back to himself on the first batter before striking out the second for a quick two outs. After a hit and full-count walk made things dicey, Byrd claimed the third out on a fly-out to center field.

Henderson State (24-20, 18-12 GAC) will play one final non-conference game at Delta State Tuesday, Apr. 23 at 3 p.m. before finishing the year with the Battle of the Ravine at Clyde Berry Field. The three-game series will get underway Friday, Apr. 26 at 6 p.m.
