CLEVELAND, Miss. - For the second time in three days, Henderson State overcame a four-run first-inning deficit to pick up its final non-conference win of the 2024 season over Delta State, 12-5.
After the Statesmen rattled off four runs in the first frame, the Reddies' pitching held them to just one run the rest of the way in route to the seven-run victory.
Kaden Argenbright and
Luke Rice each tallied three hits and one RBI in the victory as Argenbright now owns the program's record for the longest hitting streak with 23 games. Rice continues his hot streak as of late with 12 hits and nine RBI in the last five games.
Henderson State threw seven pitchers in the midweek contest as
Andrew Howard (4-0) picked up the win in relief, facing just three batters in his one inning of work with two strikeouts.
Matthew Herron matched Howard with a team-high two strikeouts, earning a no-decision after his 1.2 innings pitched.
Delta State opened the game with four runs in the first inning, holding the advantage until the the third frame when HSU answered with its own four-spot.
Alex Day, getting his first start of the season, delivered a lead-off home run to get HSU on the board and set up the big team at-bat.
Argenbright came to the plate four batters later and sent an RBI-single through the left side before
Louis Holt came to the dish moments later to score the two more to knot the game at 4-4.
Both teams added runs in the fourth and fifth, but that was all the Reddies would allow Delta State to get. Henderson State kept the game at a tie until the seventh inning when the red-and-gray scored seven runs in two innings.
With the lead in hand, 8-5, HSU delivered its second four-spot in the eighth thanks to four hits and DSU error. A pair of two-out singles from Holt and
Austin Scritchfield scored the game's final two runs as the Reddies left Harvey Stadium with the 12-5 win.
Henderson St. (25-20) will return to Clyde Berry Field for one final weekend in the regular season when cross-street rival Ouachita Baptist heads over for a three-game showdown beginning Friday, Apr. 26 at 6 p.m.
