ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - Henderson State advanced to 3-0 in a 27-12 win over Arkansas Tech (2-1) in Saturday's Family Day game at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium.
Jordan Jackson opened the scoring for ATU after hauling in a 40-yard touchdown pass from Ethan Everson with just under five minutes to go in the first quarter. Henderson State responded with 35-yard score on the ground from Jeremiah Davis. The ensuing PAT from Kolby King made it a 7-6 ballgame with 1:30 remaining in the first.
Christopher Baldazo hit a 30-yard field goal to give the Wonder Boys a two-point lead heading into the halftime break. He recorded the only three points of the third quarter with another make from 36 yards out.
Trailing 12-7, the Reddies finally broke their scoring drought when Davis hit pay dirt for the second time with 12:27 left in the game. The junior from Montalba, Texas, made it a hat trick with a one-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes to go. Seconds later, Kolbi Crawford provided the final score of the night with a 43-yard pick six. In all, Henderson scored 20Â unanswered points in the final quarter of play to pick up its sixth straight victory over Arkansas Tech.
Davis finished the night with a career-high 158 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries. His single-game rushing total from Saturday is the highest of any HSU player this season.
Fellow running back Jalen Abraham paced the Reddies with 29 receiving yards on three catches.Â
On defense, Crawford led the way with eight total tackles, half of a tackle for loss, and the aforementioned interception return for a touchdown. Cameron Thomas added an interception of his own and five total tackles.
Gary Lewis had another productive game with seven total tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and a sack. Bryant Hammond II tied Lewis for the second-most total tackles on the team with seven. Catrell Wallace rounded out the top four with six tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss.
Jakobe Shell contributed up front with 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Linebacker Eric Thibodeaux provided one of night's most impressive defensive feats when he sacked ATU's Everson for a 24-yard loss.
Punter Axel Robertson averaged 45.5 yards per punt on eight attempts in one of the best performances of his career thus far.
With their perfect record still intact, Henderson State will travel to Searcy to battle fellow unbeaten Harding (3-0) next week. The Reddies' matchup with the national No. 1 Bisons is slated for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, at First Security Stadium.
