HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Henderson State dropped its season opener to Washburn in a 17-7 result at Majestic Park on Friday. The game served as the opening contest in the Fourth Annual Mike Dugan Invitational, which honors the memory of HSU alum, former SID, and Reddie Hall of Honor inductee Mike Dugan.
The Ichabods jumped out to an early 5-0 lead by hitting four home runs in the first three innings of play. Henderson's Luke Rice would respond with a two-run blast of his own to cut the deficit to three in the bottom half of the third. Both teams would plate four runs apiece in the fourth inning to bring the score to 9-6. Over the next three innings, eight additional Washburn runs and a Dylan Block home run helped to provide the final result.
Rice led the Reddies with three RBI in the loss. His third RBI was the result of a fielder's choice in the fourth.
Block's pinch-hit homer came in the first at-bat of his HSU career.
Cal Jones reached based safely in all four of his plate appearances, including two hits and two walks. He came around to score on Rice's fielder's choice.
Arkadelphia native Tripp Campbell doubled in one of Henderson's three extra-base hits on Friday. Campbell also scored once.
Austin Scritchfield (single), Jeremy Schork (walk), and Luke Farrar (walk) all reached base and made it home safely one time each. Scritchfield's base hit led to two RBI.
Louis Holt rounded out the Reddie hit parade with an RBI single.
HSU will look to rebound tomorrow, February 1, against No. 11 Missouri Southern. First pitch at Majestic Park is slated for 10 a.m.
