Reddies Shut Out Rangers 59-0

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State used a three-score first quarter and never looked back on Saturday, defeating Northwestern Oklahoma State by a final score of 59-0. The shutout by the Henderson defense was the first since 2023, when the Reddies went back-to-back games shutting out Southwestern Oklahoma and Northwestern Oklahoma by scores of 51-0 and 56-0, respectively.

HSU won the toss, electing to take the ball, and the offense wasted no time; defending GAC Offensive Player of the Week Andrew Edwards connected with Micah Greene on a 56-yard touchdown pass, capping off a three-play, 72-yard drive that took just 1:20. The Reddie defense forced a NWOSU punt, one of several on the day, and quickly got the ball back.

Edwards threw just his third interception of the season to give the ball right back to the Rangers as the teams traded possessions; Henderson quickly got the ball back and had a lengthy drive, but a costly holding penalty held them to a 43-yard field goal from Ryan McDonnell.

Northwestern's next drive stalled when Lanard Harris intercepted a Jax Bernard pass at the midfield stripe and returned it all the way to the Rangers' four-yard line. The Reddies wasted no time, as Fredrick O'Donald ran the ball in for a four-yard touchdown, his first of the season, which increased the lead to 17-0 after just one quarter of play.

The Reddie defense continued to shine in the second quarter, as Leo Morris intercepted a Bernard pass and took it 51 yards for the first pick-six by the Reddie defense this season.

Both offenses spent a majority of the second quarter trading possessions with no scores or plays of consequence; Henderson broke that streak with just under a minute to play in the half, as Edwards again connected with Greene on a big play, this time for a 46-yard score. Greene had three catches on the day for 106 yards and the two first half touchdowns. The Reddies took the 31-0 score into the break.

The second half was more of the same for HSU, with Edwards scoring on a 14-yard run on the first possession of the half to capitalize on great Reddie field position: HSU only started inside their 20-yard line on three of their 13 total drives on the day.

Edwards's day was done after that touchdown drive, and Austin Ledbetter picked up where his teammate left off. On his second drive of the game, Ledbetter connected with Trayv'on Culbert on a 39-yard touchdown strike to increase the Reddie lead to 45-0 after three quarters.

The final period was marked by two Reddie rushing touchdowns, as Chris Gannaway (15 yard run) and Trent Haygood (11 yard run) added to the HSU lead and established the final score.

Edwards, in just over two quarters of action, was 15-of-25 passing, for 203 yards and two touchdowns; he also ran the ball five times for 35 yards and a score. Haygood led the Reddie rushing attack with 58 yards and a touchdown on just four carries.

Gerard Culotta led the defensive attack for the Reddies, continuing to lead the team with seven tackles and two sacks. The Henderson defense held NWOSU to just 168 yards on 60 offensive plays, while compiling 528 yards of offense on 59 plays. HSU was a perfect five-for-five on red zone opportunities, and they compiled 24 first downs while allowing just 11.

The Reddies return to Carpenter-Haygood Stadium next Saturday for Homecoming, when they welcome second-ranked Harding to town. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
