Reddies Use Strong Fourth Quarter to Win at Southeastern, 21-20

DURANT, Okla. – Henderson State used a furious fourth quarter to storm back from a two-possession deficit and snuck away with a road victory Saturday, defeating Southeastern Oklahoma State by a final score of 21-20.

Neither team started strong offensively, trading punts for the first seven minutes of the game. The first scoring play was a result of the Reddie defense, as Matthew Gainey blocked a Southeastern punt through the back of the end zone. The safety was the first by a Reddie defense this season.

The offense failed to convert and was forced to punt the ball back to the Savage Storm. After another punt, the Reddie offense found its groove. Chris Gannaway ran for a 10-yard touchdown to cap off a 16-play, 75-yard drive that took over eight minutes off the clock. The extra point was missed, ensuring the game remained a one-possession affair.

Punts and turnovers were the highlights of the second quarter until the last two minutes: Southeastern put together a 10-play, 98-yard drive to end the half. The drive was helped by two costly Reddie penalties: a pass interference immediately followed by a personal foul that gave the Savage Storm 25 extra yards.

After the halftime break, the Reddies had prime field position, but a Trent Haygood fumble resulted in a 45-yard scoop and score by Southeastern's Andrew Grissom. The special teams struggle continued for both teams, as Mulumba Wa-Kalonji blocked the extra point attempt to set the SEOSU advantage at 13-8 halfway through the third quarter.

The rest of the third frame was a quiet one; Southeastern scored again early in the fourth, thanks to a Jonathan Cobb 41-yard touchdown run. With that score, the Reddies trailed by two scores with 14:06 to play.

From there, the Reddie offense kicked into high gear; Jeremiah Davis struck from a yard out to cap a 10-play, 68-yard drive. The defense followed suit again, forcing a five-play drive that went just 19 yards for the Savage Storm. The ball was punted back to Henderson, and the quick strike offense hit: Andrew Edwards connected with Cayden Davis for a 55-yard touchdown to give HSU the lead for the first time in the second half, and it was a lead they would not relinquish.

With limited time remaining, Southeastern turned the ball over on downs in just four plays, and the Reddies ran out the clock to snag the victory.

Edwards was 19-of-29 passing for 186 yards and a touchdown; the senior quarterback also ran 15 times for 79 yards to pace Henderson. Cayden Davis's lone catch was the 55-yard strike that proved to be the game-winner.

Gerard Culotta once again led the Reddie defense with 12 tackles, including half a tackle for loss. His partner in the linebacking corps, Jordan Owens, was the lone Henderson player with multiple tackles for loss with two.
