Henderson Takes Home Opener Over Champion Christian

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State used a 52 percent shooting day and a balanced scoring attack to defeat Champion Christian Wednesday in the 2025-26 home opener by a final score of 112-82.

The Reddies and Tigers went back-and-forth early, with four early lead changes before HSU took over for good at the 10:22 mark with a Zaveion Okoh fastbreak dunk after falling behind by as many as four points in the first 10 minutes of the game. Henderson shot just one of eight from three in the opening frame, but was 25-of-45 from the field with 36 points in the paint and 14 fast break points.

Jabari West was the catalyst for the Reddie offense early, with 11 points and three rebounds on five-of-six shooting in the opening 20 minutes. KJ Sykes led the team with 12 points of six-of-nine shooting in the first half, with Tyson Whybrew adding six rebounds.

Henderson took a 16-point lead into halftime and extended it in the second half; Champion Christian made a run in the first 12 minutes, cutting the Reddie lead down to as few as seven points before a 12-0 run took the momentum back for good. The HSU lead grew to as many as 31 before the final buzzer.

The Reddies finished the night 44-of-84 from the field, five-of-20 from three-point range, and 19-of-28 from the free throw line. They also won the rebounding battle 54-26.

Zaveion Okoh continues to pace the Reddie scoring, leading the team with 21 points, three rebounds, and two assists. West added 17 points and eight boards, with Sykes finishing with 15 points. Grey Garrison and Creed Williamson added 11 points apiece, with Garrison having the lone double-double of the night with 11 rebounds to go along with the 11 points.

HSU will be back in action at the Duke Wells Center on Saturday, facing the Lyon College Scots. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
