Okoh's 36 Not Enough as Reddies Fall to UAFS in Overtime

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State shot over 46 percent from the field and scored 52 points in the paint Wednesday afternoon, but it was not enough to overcome 15 made three pointers by Arkansas-Fort Smith as the Reddies fell in overtime 95-92.

UAFS used an early 9-0 run to get themselves out in front, due in no small part to back-to-back three pointers from Aiden Buckmon and Jarren McAllister, forcing a Reddie timeout. The Lions led by as many as 12 in the first half before Henderson got themselves back into the game. A 12-0 Reddies run, punctuated by a Tyson Whybrew three-point play, gave Henderson its first lead since the first three minutes of the game; HSU would survive a late UAFS run to take a one-point lead into the half, 42-41.

The Lions regained the lead and held onto it for the first eight minutes of the second half, but the Reddies were always within striking distance, never trailing by more than eight points until retaking the lead with 11:31 to play.

The teams spent the last 11 minutes exchanging leads, with neither team ever leading by more than five points over the back stretch in a game that featured nine ties and eight lead changes. Both squads exchanged three-point field goals in the last two minutes of the game, but neither team could gain the lead in the last 90 seconds, sending the game into an overtime period.

UAFS scored the first five points of the extra frame before a Zaveion Okoh layup broke the scoring drought for the Reddies. Okoh then got HSU to within one point after sinking three free throws. The teams exchanged two-point field goals, keeping the Lion lead at just one point with 45 seconds left.

A controversial no-call on a Deazhon Perkins layup gave UAFS possession, forcing the Reddies to foul. Still trailing by just three, Henderson could not come up with a game-tying basket, setting the 95-92 final score.

Okoh led all scorers with 36 points while leading the team with three steals. He was also four-for-six from three-point range. Deazhon Perkins added 19 off the bench, and Tyson Whybrew threw in 13 points and nine rebounds. Xavier Owens had a team-high 12 rebounds to go along with nine points. The Reddies shot 35-of-75 from the field and 6-of-20 from long distance.

Henderson returns to action on Saturday afternoon on the road at Christian Brothers University in Memphis. Tip-off from Canale Arena is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
