ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Henderson State scored 15 runs for the second time in as many games this week in a series-opening victory over Southern Nazarene. The Reddies defeated the visiting Crimson Storm by a score of 15-7 on Friday.
Jeremy Schork started the game's scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI single through the right side of the infield. SNU's Trey Orman responded with a two-run homer in the top of the second. HSU tied the game again in the bottom half of the inning via a Louis Holt RBI base hit. Plating three runs in the top of the fourth, the Crimson Storm jumped back in front with a 5-2 advantage. The following inning, the Reddies completely changed the complexion of the ballgame.
In the bottom of the fifth, Schork hit a two-run home run to center field to cut SNU's lead to one. That lead would evaporate when Holt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded later in the frame. A two-run error and a two-run Jaxson Gregg single extended the Reddies' lead to four. By the end of the fifth, 13 HSU batters had come to the plate and seven had scored.
Southern Nazarene plated a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to make it 9-7. From here, however, it was all Henderson offensively. The Reddies struck for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning - two on a Luke Farrar double and one on a Luke Rice single. In the seventh, Tripp Campbell hit an RBI double of his own to drive in HSU's 13th run of the game. Farrar provided the final runs of the contest on a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth.
Farrar and Schork each recorded three hits and three legs of the cycle in the win. Farrar single, doubled, and homered, while Schork single, tripled, and homered. Both men also walked once.Â
Rice had three hits in his own right, including a double.
Campbell and Alex Galvan both hit safely twice. Galvan reached base a total of three times, while Campbell got on base on four separate occasions.
Holt and Cal Jones each reached in three of their five plate appearances and scored two runs apiece.
Jaxson Gregg accounted for the remaining base knock in Henderson's 16-hit parade on Friday night.
Dylan Block was hit by a pitch and later came around to score.
Austin Rainey earned his first win of the season in relief. He struck out two batters in 1.1 innings of work.
Tyler Bates secured the 11-out save by fanning six Crimson Storm hitters and allowing no runs.
The Reddies will be looking for the series win and a potential sweep when they host SNU in a doubleheader at Clyde Berry Field tomorrow, Mar. 22. The first game is slated to begin at noon.
