MONTICELLO, Ark. — Henderson State picked up its third win of the season over Arkansas-Monticello on Tuesday night as the Reddies jumped out to a big lead and held on late to upend the Weevils 11-9 in non-conference action.
The victory improves the Reddies to 17-13 overall and 3-1 on the year against UAM.Â
It was a total team effort for HSU offensively, as nine different players contributed to the team's 16 hits in the win. Jordan Allen finished 3-for-6 with two doubles, Nate Moore had two hits and three RBIs, and Luke Farrar continued his hot streak at the plate with two hits and a home run.
Eight different pitchers took the mound on Tuesday night for the Reddies, including Payton Windham, who made his first start since Feb. 2 against Arkansas-Fort Smith. Jack Haley earned the win in relief for HSU by going 2.2 innings and striking out three batters.
Henderson got off to a blazing start on the road in Monticello. Farrar led off the game with a solo home run, which set the table for four runs in the top of the first inning for HSU.Â
Leading 4-0, the Reddies continued to tack on and scored a run in the second, three more in the third, and another in the fourth to build a commanding 9-0 advantage early in the game.Â
The Weevils refused to roll over, however, and used crooked numbers in the bottom of the fourth and sixth frames to trim the Reddie lead down to 10-7 after six complete innings.
HSU plated a big insurance run in the seventh when Alex Galvan reached on an error to lead off the inning and came around to score on an RBI single from Julio Vasquez. The unearned run extended the Reddies' cushion to 11-7.
UAM made one final push in the bottom of the ninth, as back-to-back doubles and a groundout scored two runs, but Payton Byrd retired the final two Weevil batters via strikeout and put the stamp on Henderson's 17th victory of the year.
The Reddies, who have won four-straight GAC weekend series, return home on Friday at 6 p.m. when they host Southern Arkansas in the first contest of a pivotal three-game slate at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia.
